Why do people hate Michael Bay so much?

I can enjoy a low-budget slapdash movie perfectly well, because I have no particular expectations and therefore almost anything is a pleasant surprise.

But when I'm watching something theoretically made with some real resources and to what ought to be a higher standard, professional conditioning kicks in and I find myself sitting there evaluating the work I'm seeing -

- unless it's a sufficiently good movie that it pulls me in and I don't. Which is uncommon.

As Pauline Kael wrote, there are people who just love the movies, and there are people who love the movies they love.

I can see critisizing his effects. Vaild. I think, from the responses I've seen, it's because he's what we call a plain ol asshole. As we say in the upper middle west eastern northern part of upper southern Canader eh.

I wouldn't call him an asshole, just not thoroughly creative. Like I said, he tends to fill in gaps in the plot with effects, and hopes that it works.

Alfred Hitchcock was reportedly an asshole.

Michael Mann certainly can be an asshole.

Paul Verhoeven in an asshole mood is someone to avoid.

James Cameron apparently has some asshole in him.

but...

*those* guys, at the end of their asshole days, turn (turned) out some wonderful films, complete with stuff like character development, a discernable story arc, and all those other little bells and whistles that you can't just throw cash at, to get.

Bay, on the other hand, just turns out colorful, expensive-to-make crap whose only redeeming feature is that it consistently earns a return for the studio.

Well effects wise, he is pretty interesting. Almost everything he does is practical. Yeah - nearly every car that blew up was practical. He bought a ton of water logged cars from the Katrina disaster and blew them up.

So, that way - he is pretty cool.

However, he is a total jerk. I know a few people who worked with him and no one has good things to say. His famous "Bay is coming in hot" line is pretty much the worst thing one can here. Guy is always yelling.

Effects wise, nice.
Style, not so nice.

And Max, I've heard Cameron is a total jerk from a director I worked with. Granted he wasn't the nicest guy in the world either. Ahh, gotta love directors. (I'm one of them - though I don't think I'm an asshole? :) )

From what people tell me, I apparently led some kind of charmed existence on Avatar. I always seemed to catch him in a good mood, or something.

Honestly I don't know they guy. Don't have a beef with him. His stuff looks Hollywood enough to me.

I really dont care if people don't like him. Maybe his employees are assholes too. e.g. I ask you to do a job by a date and you say yeah: then, is it done? No? and so forth...with major bucks on the line.

So I don't know, don't care. He does a decent job.
Don't like him? Don't work for him.

'Transformers II' being more-of-the-same, is for me a good reason to avoid it, if 'same' means more of the crapola that was 'Transformers...'

Man, I just watched this last week on the movie network, absolutely awful. A Mountain Dew machine transforms and starts shooting cans? Enough said.

The only thing good about it was this....
