Why do people hate Michael Bay so much?

Well yes and no. I mean everything you say is right, but also, anyone who makes those deals clearly wants to make BIG MONEY movies. There are other filmmakers - the Coen Bros, Woody Allen who have spent their entire careers largely doing what they want by keeping their budgets low enough that no one really cares. What you're saying is true, but a director who works in those conditions chose to do so.

agreed, but what I was getting at was, why hate the man with nothing to say at all???? Why not hate someone who's actully saying something?

i see what it is about the hate!?

No prob with ol Mikey.
If I ever meet him and he turns out to be an asshole, I'll slug him, get thrown in jail, sued for 10 million, and post my court progress right here at dvx.
Otherwise, naw, he's okay. I don't really get the whole hate thing.
Really... lol. If you don't like his movies, who cares? I like em just fine.

did michael bay direct this post too?

Bay seems to be a throwback to the old studio system. I imagine him with hundreds of people around working their asses off, walking in and barking orders a mile a minute (like Kirk Douglas in The Bad and the Beautiful). But for the studios, he's a prize thoroughbred.

I made the mistake of buying Pearl Harbor on DVD before I bought it, and made it about 30 minutes into the story before I returned it. I was really looking forward to the action sequences, but never made it that far. Awful, awful film.

I think that he's scorned by people like us because he has all the toys and people that we would ever want (and then some), and makes them into cliche dreck. I know that we could make hundreds of films for the budget of one of his movies, and at least one or two of them would be better than Pearl Harbor. They may not be the commercial success that one of Bay's cookie-cutter popcorn flicks typically are, but it seems wasteful to throw that much money at one story, that's not even that good.

People hate him because 1) people generally resent success by other people, and the greater that success, the more amplified the hate, and 2) because millions of people like his films, which only makes 1) worse.

There might be people like that but I would not say that is the main reason at all. He simply has too much of a way too commercial style. He could have done something with The Island but he chose to throw in all his funky gels and filters along with those super budgeted tv commercial moves and ended up making one big commercial instead of a movie...like he always does. I mean, whenever I turn on the tv and there's a Mike Bay movie on it takes a couple of seconds before I see it's not a commercial. I used to really like the "MTV/Commercial" visual style when I first started learning about film, but then I've realized you REALLY have to know how to make it work for you if you don't want to come out with something REALLY shallow (like Mike Bay does  )

I'm not saying I hate him. Actually Mike has helped me A LOT. It's very therapeutical for me to think about crucifying him and throwing darts at his crotch after I've seen one of his "movies". Ok, the bastard deserves to die while being raped by a Transformer! There! I've said it! It's out in the open. What everybody was thinking.

I totally disagree. I mean, Steven Spielberg is the undisputed king of Hollywood in box office grosses, yet I admire and respect the guy. He's made a few bad films (who hasn't), but he's made great entertaining ones and great ones with a message as well. He also seems like a lovely guy.

Michael Bay on the other hand.....is a hack. You could substitute any other action director's name on the credits to his movies (eg. Dominic Sena) and you wouldn't know the difference. Anyone with 100 million dollars, 10 cameras rolling at once operated by talented professionals, seven helicopters, and a budget for sound and special effects to surpass most other movies' ENTIRE BUDGET can make a passable action movie.

Can he direct actors? No. PEARL HARBOR is one of the biggest jokes in the business. (Even funnier is that it won an Academy Award, for sound editing or something!)

Is he an 'auteur'? No. Compare him to David Fincher. Both came from commercials. But Fincher is a visual stylist, a real auteur. Bay is not.

His violence is gratuitous. I walked out of THE ROCK because I found it offensive. It's lowest common denominator filmmaking.

At least he's got a sense of humor, as evidenced with those ads he's doing. But Michael Bay is the Big Mac of the film world. Everyone's tried him, but he's exceptionally average.

Oh Brandon, you're the kid I have never had...and repressed for watching this type of stuff... :2vrolijk_08:
Well, I also like Micheal Bay.

He's cool, comes over for burgers, gets drunk, plays a little lamp shade golf, tries to grope the woman a bit, gets thrown out and chased down the street by the neighbourhood thugs.

Then I have to pick him up from the cop shop in the morning, call his wife, loan him a few bucks, ya know. "Yo Mikey? Wus up? Coo?"

Yeah he's a badass mofo that guy. Like his stuff though. He's alright.

I can't see how anyone could call bay a hack. Hack directors suck at everthing IMO. Bay may not be your cup of tea, but he is damn good at visuals, action, and making explosions visual and action packed. DreamWorks wouldn't give a hack a 200 million tentpole franchise. My 2 pennies.

DreamWorks wouldn't give a hack a 200 million tentpole franchise.

On the contrary, that's precisely who'd they'd give it to! A hack to me is not someone untalented, but a director for hire who can do a job well, but does it for the money, yet has no real original style of their own. Remember, Bay is a Bruckheimer boy, just like Tony Scott was. Bruckheimer wants his movies a certain way, and whether it's Scott, Bay, Sena or whoever, they're all extrememly formulaic and bland, IMO. Tony Scott tried to break out of that stereotype by making TRUE ROMANCE. Good move. Bay tried to do it by making PEARL HARBOR...

Ridley Scott on the other hand, is an auteur. Spielberg and Fincher are eons ahead of Bay.

You've opened up quite a can of worms with this forum! Keep it up!
