Why do people hate Michael Bay so much?

Lloyd Kaufman makes crap. He doesn't get the hate.

Look, I'm not defending Bay's movies (though I do think The Rock is a decent film).
I'm just saying, he gets the flak because he's made billions. If he didn't, no one would care.

You can't deny that for the most part those are all fun movies to watch though... sometimes people don't want an intensly plot-driven movie. Sometimes people just like to turn their brain off, sit back and enjoy the ride...

Look, it's all about how it's done. When Spielberg is at his best I feel like I'm being entertained by a master showman. With Bay I feel like I'm being entertained by a cheap hooker.

Michael Bay's movies are for kids...Transformers was SOOOOO BAAAAD. The dialogue, the script, the acting - all terrible. I can't believe Spielberg was involved with that movie.

Spielberg's films are brilliant for the most part. War of the Worlds (although it had a stupid ending, and Tom Cruise had too much Scientology influence on the story), was downright SCARY in some parts, because giant alien ships attacking Earth should be scary. And remember Spielberg doesn't show us everything right away. Bay just massages us with giant explosions and glossy special effects from the first scene.

I hear Bay is a not-so-nice guy, too.

Then stop watching his movies.

I actually did stop. Then I caught The Island on cable and I thought, hmm, some modest improvement. It gave me less trepidation about seeing Transformers, which I did and enjoyed. Transformers has a slightly more innocent tone that doesn't feel as crass as his earlier work. Even still, I can understand someone not liking it.

I don't hate him because of his work, i hate him because of who he is. I've spent a few weeks on two of michael bay's sets in close proximity to him. he's a dickhead. straight up.

I love his work, and area's of his personality.. but I don't know the guy.

Zak why is he a Dick? Like any inparticular reasons when you were on set?

Bay is laughing all the way to the bank. He makes movies that are the

most fun if you like action and blowing things up. Spielberg and others

were trashed in the beginning and some projects almost got pulled out

from underneath him as a fledgeling director. Bay might be making

movies that satisfy himself but in the future he'll probably be credited

with his own style of action film making. Nicolas Cage was trashed a lot

worse then Bay has ever been and he's now regarded as one of the best

actors around hollywood. Money has a way or rewriting history!

Thats true, nicolas cage is also one of my most favourite actors. Shame he doesn't deliver the same kind of performances as in he did with con air though.

I don't ever recall Nicolas Cage being called 'satan', and I highly doubt Michael Bay has a Leaving Las Vegas in him. This really isn't an apt comparison anyway. And I hate that people are still trying to defend him by saying he just makes action films with stuff blowing up, as if that inures them to criticism. Raiders of the Lost Ark is an action movie, and a great film. Die Hard is an action movie, and a great film. Aliens is an action movie, and a great film. Bay hasn't even made anything as good as the first Predator.

i have a business to protect so i'm not going to speak to specifics i've witnessed, but it is well known that he has left a trail of respected professionals in his wake that have vowed never to work with him again.

I love low-budget cheesy crap. He makes high-budget cheesy crap. Maybe that's why I don't watch his flicks?

This thread reminds me of Team America...

I missed you more than Michael Bay missed the mark
When he made Pearl Harbor
I missed you more than that movie missed the point,
And that's an awful lot, girl, and
Now, now you've gone away... and all I'm trying to say, is
Pearl Harbor sucked, and I miss you
I need you like Ben Affleck needs acting school (school school).
He was terrible in that film.
I need you like Cuba Gooding needed a bigger part (part part).
He's way better than Ben Affleck.
And now, all I can think about is your smile, and that shi*ty movie, too.
Pearl Harbor sucked, and I miss you
Pearl Harbor sucked...
Just a little bit more than I miss you...

I have no personal opinion of Bay and if he makes a movie that looks interesting I'll watch it without any preconcieved agenda. Though, to this day I have not liked a single one of his movies. His movies have good parts or specific scenes but they are never great movies that I would want to watch more than once.

I pretty much knew the whole structure of Transformers before I even saw it. He use the same plot structure and progression in everyone of his films. The only semi decent films that I enjoyed more than the others were Bad Boys and the first half of the Island. Everything else was just bland stuff that had no real merit other than to kill 2 hours of your time.

If I see one of his films on TV than I just keep changing the channel. If I haven't seen it before I would give it a try but in all likelihood that would be the only time I would watch it. Its nothing to do with him personally its just he doesn't really make interesting movies.

Haha Good one. And a trusim.

Agreed.

I took some flak for digging WotW as much as I did; it had its faults but one can't deny it was scary / freaky / fun cool.

Agreed.

Bay is all fluff and gloss. It's a shame.

It seems that Bay movies is all about your personal preference. I did not like the Island or Pearl Harbor but enjoyed everything else for what it was. I have always been an action junkie so I think action first if I am going see an action movie. I would never want or expect for Bay to some period drama piece or something out of the box for him. In my opinon Dreamworks would not give a $200 million dollar budget tent pole franchise to a hack, speaking on Transformers. A hack Bay is not. Spielberg is one of the finest directors of MY time, but I would not have wanted to see his Transformers. After all nobody does a popcorn summer explosion, gunfight, 360 camera spin, 1 million cuts, super glossy, action buffet like Michael Bay.
