Hudson, hit this tennis ball!

Mikko.... I owe you one.

I haven't laughed that hard all day... the only thing I love more then inexplainable mischief is when somebody actually gets some science behind their nonsense.

thanks for the laugh.

LMAO. Ive used something almost like that, but it shoots potatoes. And that thing shoots far- can go almost 100-150 yards.

I have some video of it- ask me about it and I may post it up.

I've built many-a-potato-gun... many. I have one in my garage right now with a bar-b-que igniter trigger. Every friend I have has got one from me... Aquanet or some other cheap hairspray is the best propellant.

100 yards? That's easy... I can shoot a potato OUT OF SIGHT... you'll never find it.

If you ever feel creative... make one of these air-guns... 4x more distance and power... at the time of the burst a "blasting" gun (non-air) is nearly 150 psi... but the potato is releasing pressure the entire way out of the gun... in the first couple of inches the potato is already slowing down from it's initial momentum and the rest of the barrel is just for accuracy. An air-gun on the other hand... well the air is expanding at a constant rate and so the potato is accellerating the ENTIRE TIME it's leaving the gun! An air gun at 100psi can shoot a potato nearly a HALF MILE. Trust me... that's the one you want... but be careful with these things... as if it isn't obvious... the potential for injury is right there at every facet. That thing may as well be a real gun at that point.

Im not used to standard- but I know its more than 300 feet (now that ive done the math). The one I use must shoot a half a kilometer. I shot one at a grain silo and I think it broke a bird's wing that was perched atop it.

What self respecting kid hasn't built a spud gun?

It's also fun to shoot eggs (not at people) or various other payloads such as glowsticks.

I had a working silencer built for mine at one point.

One funny story is when I packed the laucher and a 10lb sack of spuds for 3 hours up a mountain to go camping only to have the new brand of hairspray I was testing turn out to not be flamable! ... after my buddies stopped laughing, I got the thing to work after a few tries. :)

A funnier story is one of my afformentioned buddies who had later filled it with confetti for a theater show... He over-charged it, which results in there beeing enough fuel after the first shot to fire again. He set the thing down (accidentally) on the igniter button while forward of the barrel. Good thing he was wearing glasses, he was picking confetti out of his hair for a week!

This was all some years ago when I was, uh, young(er) and stupid(er).

- Mikko ... agreess that pneaumatic is cooler.

Mikko, great story. But, try butane in yours. That stuff will scare the mess out of you.

Also, does anyone (in tradition) shout "POTATO GUN" before firing?

And lastly, I didnt know everyone has a spud gun. I mean, everyone who has ever watched Red-Green's movie has one, but wow, there must be a large population of potato gun owners (though I think theyre illegal in some states.)

I wasn't going to mention this, but one year we used guns with 2" pvc barrels (larger then I normally use) and got about 75 yards apart... and we had baseball mits... and... uh... we were aiming at each other... ahem.

If there was ever a game called "hot potato" that was it.

I would never try anything like that with a pneumatic gun... the hairspray/butane/wd40 guns are potentially danerous, but quite tame in comparison to an air gun... did you know you can get rifled pvc on the net? The hardest thing to control is the trajectory of the spud. 75% of the shots will be a hook or slice.

When you're playing catch there's nothing scarier then watching a sliced potato coming right at you.
