Who's used an HVX and has an opinion on (video) *noise*?

Nobody promised us WYSIWYG on monitors. But on good ones and with zebra and black stretch, you can fit it nicely into the format. Experience with the camera settings and the monitor is the most important thing though. It is your reference and you have to know how it translates to the real world.

THANK GOD THE HVX200's AREN'T HERE YET

THANK GOD THE HVX200's AREN'T HERE YET

Well,
I spent a few hours at AbelCine in NY.
Those guys are great in there.
I got to download P2 to laptop and stream. It all worked great.
Noise?
Oh Yeah,
But if you tweak the settings -- a lot less.
Is it managable? For me and my immediate needs, I think yes. Sometimes it is actually quite nice... Sometimes.
The JVC was there with it's noise and split screen issues, but it sure looked sweet.
Do I like the Canon footage that I see all over the web? Uh, YEAH.
What am I gonna do?
can't really justify 10,000 for a cam yet...
the HVX (with no P2's) @ 6k is pushing the limits of my feeble wisdom.

But this is Just me.
Here's the deal:
I am confident that as I get to really know this camera, I will be able to make her sing...
but then again...
...nevermind,
but still...
...No, No, No...
although...Canon? Creditcard?
What?
Who said that?
Pappas, was that you?
Dang it. I an't never gonna make up my mind.
...THANK GOD THE HVX200's AREN'T HERE YET

Did I just say that?

Shhhh, listen Benton. In the wind..........

How Evil Is This! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Haaaaa....Ha Ha Ha Ha.....

It's only $3 dollars a day for about 365 days and you have the extra money you need! Look at it like that...... Some people spend 4 bucks a day at Star Bucks!

I have been doing all tests with a live Component feed into the DELL display. I move around lights and models. I pushed the worst case scenerio for my planned shoot as I am sure most of you guys do.

The nice thing is the P2 dumps are so fast I can quickly see how my post is going to effect the shots and try something different.

I think the cam is a finicky beast but what it gives me in return is more than worth the drama. I may not be able to short a certain style of lighting with lots of mid /low values with detail but I wlll accept that. Maybe a better DP could pull it together who knows. Either way I can get what I want.

I think it bears repeating- My experiece so far has been that highlight blow outs are more recoverable than any other cam I have used. And to me that is better than low light capabilities. Has anyone else had this experience?

I agree with the above post about knowing your cam and monitor to get the best picture. Being able to look in a monitor and quickly judge how it's looking for me is faster than trying to meter every light or zone.

| really don't think anyone should make a buying decision based on any experience from other users. You really need to see the footage to make a informed decision. It's just too close to call any other way. It's like trying to describe a color to someone who has not seen it. You really have to see it to fully appreciate how it looks.

Very true,
One thing I will add/ask:
if you are using 24p/24f the resolution of the Canon and the Pany seems to be quite similar.
(Just a note for us Res afflicted posters)

I've read a lot about the noise issues of the HVX200. I've seen it in some of my shots and I haven't seen it in others. I haven't had it enough to really be able to know what settings I need to have for a particular situation.

I was going over some SD footage I shot with my PD-150 a few years ago. Compared to the HVX200, I think it has a lot more noise than even my worse shots with the HVX.
I always thought it was a clean camera until I compared it to the HVX. Now granted, I have a lot more real esate with the HVX but after looking at the HD footage, I'm almost embarresed to show anyone my SD footage anymore.

I thought it was fun to compare the real estate between SD and HD so I put a SD clip on top of a 720p clip. It's hard to tell from the still but the SD clip has a lot more noise in it than the HD clip does.

I know we're talking apples and oranges here but I guess when I look back at what I had, the noise problem in the HVX isn't really a problem, at least to me it isn't.

I think so many people are getting stuck on the noise issue. Sure it's there, but man, compared to what I shot on the PD150 on its best days, it doesn't hold a candle to the HVX.
I actually see more noise on the PD150 footage than I've seen with the HVX so far.
I feel I know the PD150 pretty well and was able to get the best image possible from it. But after seeing the HVX footage I can't believe how much noise is in the PD150 footage.
If anyone wants to see the PD150 footage let me know and I'll upload a few seconds so you can see what I'm talking about.
