Who's used an HVX and has an opinion on (video) *noise*?

I hired Jarred and his HVX recently for a shoot, basically we were shooting elements in front of a greenscreen for compositing into a shot (no need to mention the project name in this thread). Jarred has written about this shoot elsewhere and his impression of the noise. It's true that between frame-averaging and some tweaking in Ultimatte we got usable footage (and the end results are damn-near amazing), I was still very surprised by the amount of noise visible.

It's one of those things that you don't notice at first glance, but once it's pointed out to you it's impossible to miss (even at a glance). So much motion, pretty much everywhere, and not just in gradients to lower-light (though that's where it's easiest to see). It looks kinda like film grain but *much* more hyper. Once we'd noticed it I even saw it on the SD out (we also hooked up a DVX and did see it there, so it's not extraordinary--just something I didn't expect from this camera).

Now, I've read that the JVC has similar levels of noise and that the Canon is far worse, but they weren't an option for this shoot anyway (because of HDV's crappy colorspace).

We tried all the modes, some were so horrible for noise it's hard to understand why they were included at all. The two that showed it the least were Cinelook-D and crush-blacks (I think that's the name).

I guess it's just that I had thought this camera was damn-near god's own creation, it certainly seemed perfect spec-wise for our shoot: 4:2:2, 1080"p", getting the data off the P2 cards was the only concern. The colorspace was fine, getting what we needed off the P2 cards turned out to be easy, unfortunately it's not nearly true 1080p (absolutely didn't want any interlace 'slip' in some frames), but 720pN was good enough--except the noise made our specific application harder. Having pixels in motion along the edge between your element and the greenscreen adds artifacts, not as bad as DV compression would have been of course, but still pretty scary for something being blown up to film res.

Any bets as to whether the HVX-200b will have big improvements to noise or a mode (maybe even a firmware upgrade for current models?!) with active noise reduction?

It basically comes down to the fact that somebody had posted on here a couple weeks ago that they tested the HVX and decided the quality just wasn't near good enough for their application. I had read that and I dismissed it out of hand, right up until I was looking at frames in motion on a 21" monitor--then I understood perfectly what he'd meant. Though even for us it's not necessarily a deal-breaker, as I said, I was surprised.

Well, that rambling is my experience and my thoughts as relates to *my application*. I fully agree that as a ~$6k camcorder it's great for many things... independent films shot entirely on it, probably anything for TV, etc. should be fine. But for shots one intends to incorporate with VFX, or even as the 'little camera' in conjunction with a VariCam or higher-end HD camera I really have to wonder if it's just too different to be intercut.

That's kind of been my point all along. People often seem to be distracted by the "subject" in the frame when viewing the output or playback of the HVX200--they don't "notice" the noise at first. Shoot any blue sky, and study the part of the frame with the sky in it--it's noisy, no matter what 1/3" camera you're talking about, SD or HD. Shoot the sky with a 10-year-old, analog Betacam 2/3" camera, and voila! No noise.

Properly exposed, framed on a scene with decent contrast, the HVX colorimetry and noise characteristics looked every bit as good as a (formally) $60,000 BVW600, only much sharper. At NBC, in a side-by-side comparison of two, 2/3" Betacam cameras (a BVW400A, and a BVW600), and the 1/3" HVX200, I made a subjective visual comparison among the three cameras on both the Panasonic 17" HD LCD and a broadcast-class, Sony 12" SD CRT monitor in both SD and HD modes. All observations were made of the live output only, which excludes any compression artifacts from the comparison. I underexposed each camera by one, two, and three stops (from f/2.8 to f/8). At underexposure, at those values, the 1/3" HVX exhibited an extreme amount of noise, when compared with either of the two 2/3" Betacam cameras.

For example, on the 12" Sony CRT monitor, the visible chroma noise "blocks" exhibited by the HVX200 were approximately 0.5 inches wide on the CRT's 12" screen. I mean, they were HUGE. I was VERY surprised by the chroma noise size and shape on the HVX. But once the HVX was properly irised, the noise decreased substantially, and the picture looked incredibly good. The deceiving part is, I think, that a camera that can look so good under optimum conditions, you would think, couldn't look so bad under less than optimal conditions. The 2/3" SD cameras, on the other hand, showed noise as well, it was simply several huge orders of magnitude smaller. I simply had no idea the disparity between a 2/3" imager and a 1/3" imager would be so great under those conditions. Let me say this again, this is NOT a "problem" with the HVX--it is a limitation, and design constraint of 1/3" imagers in general, and of their comparatively low price points.

I just shot some tests tonight of a girl sitting on a couch. I had two 300w lights on the subject with barn doors controlling the spill. I was shocked once we pulled the footage into FCP to see the amount of noise.

WE were wide open on the iris. Yet the areas where the light fell off was banding a bit and filled with noise. The same shot with the DVX looked great. It was nice and moody. I am going to fiddle with the came setting and try some other lighting set ups but I think we are going to need a lot more light and the lighting is going to have to be pulled down in post to get the same moody image on the HVX. To the eye and DVX the ambient light in the shadows was fine but the HVX really didn't like it.

I don't think this make the camera unacceptable just different than I was used to. I agree that the camera looks great with lots of light it's just shocking how fast it falls off.

I shudder to think what the mini-35 adapter is going to do to the footage.

If I discover we had the a wrong setting that caused this noise issue I will be sure to report back.

Grain causes some problems with posting/compositing/etc., but other than that, grain looks beautiful. I hate a static image. Have you ever seen a panorama that was made into a still by the gop compression -- you could not tell it was a movie at all -- and what you say is "my god someone give me some grain". Yes it is a limitation and you can ad it in post if you want to, but I am SOOOOOO not worried about the grain for my HVX purposes. I always shoot with thick detail coring on the dvx because I prefer the grain over the horizontal artifacts. The res of he hvx has me a bit sombered, but the grain, NO. But to each his own. Grain haters go elsewhere.
 
I have a... question, could the noise be different from FCP and Avid ? I always see the Mac people complain ;) (Im the only PC guy who complain, but I have no HVX200 of yet ;)
 
The noise problem I am seeing is more than beauty grain it seems more funky and does some banding artifacting. A white wall with a soft shadow in low light produced a definite band around the subject that danced in a odd not film like way.

I should mention that the footage was viewed on a dell 24" HD monitor which is going to make the noise more visible than that of a regular SD monitor. So as long as you are not shooting for 35mm blow up or HD big screen viewing. I would assume with broadcast HD it would not be as visible.

Like I said more test are in order from my end. To be fair the DVX footage looked like arse on the HD monitor so the noise may be in both cams but only visible on the HD because it has more detail.

Then again it could all be a serious case of Operator Error ( I pray this is the case). Having only had the cam for a week and this is the first low light tests I have tried.
I want to use the cam for a dark moody film so I really need to figure this all out.
 
Owning the dell.. I do think the monitor really shows off all of the imperfections.. and noise that I wasn't seeing at all on my old CRT which could handle the 720 stuff no problem. This same footage now on the Dell is almost picked apart. I do think it's a great monitor for footage that is bright and evenly exposed but it looks bad in the darks and such.

Have you hooked it up to a HDTV as well? I think they are a lot more forgiving and also kind of designed to view from a distance. Up close with the DELL kind of makes everything so apparant. The other thing too though is that the SD footage on the DELL look terrible.. Really really bad. DVDs and S-VHS as well... Man, worse than my 20 inch K-mart TV. But then again, the HD trailers on the Apple site are ROCKING.

Let's hope somethings get fixed... The noise does kind of bother me now.. so I can finally understand what people were talking about...

This is surprising to me as I've posted a lot of H1 footage, and noise was never a noticeable issue.
It's got good sensitivity, and it actually has active noise reduction capabilities, but frankly, for a green screen shoot, I'm trying to understand how this camera wouldn't have warranted consideration. It's SDI output is ideal for controlled studio shoots. I've piped SDI straight into my Mac with no issues, and recorded very good DVCPROHD 1080p with it. In all practicality, how would this be any different than pulling DVCPRO HD off of P2 cards?

Have you seen 24F material? The motion and resolution might surprise you...and you can acquire it in an array of quality codecs.

The problem I have with the HVX noise is not that there is noise (the XLH1 also has noise), but that it comes in blocks of 3x2 pixels. And that makes it very hard to correct it in post and gives a "videoish" look to the footage, at least from my subjective point of view.

To me the XLH1 noise looks much better, because it is 1x1 pixel noise - but this is highly subjective I guess. I also love the low light capabilities of the XLH1. But there are so many other points about this cam that su**, that I'm really hoping for the new CineAltas. But these are starting at 16k without lense :angry:

Could be something like the chroma-stepping issue with the DVX. But a filter should be able to clear thet out then...

I was wondering, on a film like you were working on....
Why did you go with the HVX over HDCAM??
I have not received my HVX yet but have shot for 3 years with a DVX. In the DVX, grain was more a function if the vertical detail was on thick or thin. I do not shoot 60i at all anymore and always set the vertical detail to thin and dial down the detail level. Is this the same with the HVX? I would imagine Jarred had it set to thin because you knew it was going back to film. That is some testing that should be done. In a properly exposed scene I would like to see if the noise is different in the HVX between thin, medium and thick???
I have also been a photographer for 25 years. I have thousands of Kodachrome slides I am scanning in for stock photo purposes.
Most of my scans are in the 5000x3000 pixel range. Some of them get rejected for to much "noise". The new digital eyes see film grain as noise. I do use a software program called "Noise Ninja" to filter out some of the grain. Perhaps in your scenerio you could use a noise filtering program for short effect sequences??
 
This brings up a question about exposure. If you have a scene with a wider latitude (but still within the capabilities of the HVX) arent some areas technically underexposed and some overexposed- maybe better to say less exposed and more exposed.

In this case will the less exposed areas display more noise then the more exposed areas. And if so does this change it from looking a bit grainlike to something else.

I am gonna test this - the dell monitor arrives in mere days
 
Is this a function of the monitor or of the camera? how does it look on different monitors? We know that most of the world will be using LCD, DLP, or CRT projection High Def televisions, so is it the monitor, or the camera, or a combination?

Most of the world isn't going to have a Studio CRT monitor where apparantly the image looks best. So what are our options?

I should mention a couple more things: The noise first smacked us in the face looking at frames exported from an Avid from the P2 footage, but it was just as visible through the HD direct out to a Dell 24". Once we'd noticed it, it was also visible on SD out to a CRT and even the little LCD on the camera. So it's not the codec nor the NLE used.

While this noise is by far easiest to see in borders to areas of shadow, in our experience it was omnipresent in the picture. We also tried increasing the light level, both to try a different f-stop and to try with an overall brighter picture. We didn't notice much difference with the f-stop change. While making the overall picture brighter *appears* to lessen the noise our close inspection made it seem more likely that it simply makes it harder to discern--but it's still very much there even in the fully lit parts of our element.

Also, it is somewhat like film grain, but doesn't look anything like what you see on common commercial grades of 35mm scanned at 2k or 4k resolution. It's much less subtle (especially in light-dark borders) and much more 'active'. By active I mean that it seems more like distinct pixels are moving around then that individual pixels(/grain) have subtle differences that vary over time.

Noise Ninja is for still photos or single frames.
To process 1920x1080 files takem from a
timeline would be possible. I don't know if Noise Ninja
can process a sequence of frames like you could in
Photoshop.
