GH4 who's shooting C4K? who's shooting UHD?

C4K or UHD the most? Curious who is shooting what. I choose this camera for 24p C4k of 4096x2160 for a pinch more resolution, for movies shooting.

Just wondering who is shooting what the most? Post up!

C4K = 4096x2160 (lil less crop)

UHD = Ultra HD or TV 4K 3840x2160 (most new 4K TVs and monitors use this resolution, but the TVs I tested played back 4096 just fine)

When I had a go with the GH4 last weekend I shot C4K... didn't have a go with the UHD - but still managed to look pretty beastly even on my measly 1080 monitor!

Want to spend some time with C4K, but for now UHD since there is no power off required if I need to switch to 1080p for whatever reason.

I'm shooting UHD and exporting in 1080p. I stay within the Vimeo, YouTube, and Corporate Video realm; so it makes the most sense for me. I bought the GH4 with no intention of ever exporting in 4K. I was going to go with a C100, but the extra room that I could get with 4K made much more sense. It's gives me the latitude I want for warp stabilizer on a Glidecam or run and gun tracking shot on a monopod. I can also easily fake a two cam setup.

UHD, as it scales down to 1080p with no crop.

As a side note, does anyone know if you can shoot 24p C4K mode and mix that with 23.98 footage from a GH2 or other camera? Will it lose sync over time (20-30 minute interview takes)?

I don't own a GH4 yet but I did rent one from Borrowlenses a couple weeks ago to use as a B cam to a red epic for a few scenes in a feature I'm producing about the life of Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch. We used Cimena 4k to match the epic and it looked good. That experience sold me on the GH4 I'll be buying one in the next couple weeks.

Depends on your need. Choose the right one for the right aspect ratio, not for the extra resolution. I always choose to shoot 1080p over 2K, and with the GH4 I always shoot 3840/2160 because it's the aspect ratio I am outputting to (1080p)

+1 C4K edit in 1080... tiny bit less crop and and getting a bit wider is always good especially as it is pretty easy to scale to fit HD.

Sometime i use a few old C-Mount lens and I have to occasionally shoot on UHD to avoid vignetting, but for the most port I stick to C4K with my nikon lenses to mitigate the crop factor as much as I can.

UHD exclusively, largely because it's a straightforward downscale to 1080P and I often switch between 24P and 60P and don't want to reboot the camera every time with a frequency change.

Because C4k is 4096 wide as opposed to 3840 for UHD, am I correct in assuming we get slightly more resolution shooting C4K? So far I've just been shooting in C4K but I understand how UHD would scale more easily to 1080p as 1920 is exactly 50% of 3840 (UHD) as opposed to being 46.88% of 4096.

Another way way to think about it is that you'll have slightly more (6.7% more) cropping ability in post shooting in C4K than in UHD when mastering in a 1080p timeline.

Yes, you get more width at 4096, and I noticed a wider angle also - a PINCH less "crop".

Reasons I consider UHD (3840x2160)
- TV compatibility
- SHOGUN compatibility - currently does not support 4096 :(
- cleanstest downscale to 1080 (I don't do, see below)
- 30p (a few more frames for slow mo), AND 24p
- file size should be a wee bit smaller

Reasons I shoot C4K (4096x2160)
- I shoot 2.40:1 aspect ratio only
- 24p for movie making
- little less crop
- DCP (digital cinema package) compatibility
- I plan to shoot and deliver only 4K, not HD
- I bought a 4K camera, darn it! I want highest clean pixel resolution from it

The SHOGUN really depressed me, not recording 4096. Was SOOOO looking forward to that. Now, I'll stick with internal recording until something comes along. Which lokks really freaking good by itself already!

Both. If it's a narrative, interview type piece, or a wedding (Whenever I, God forbid, have to do one) I've shot in C4K, but if I'm switching to 1080p 60 or shooting in the studio for a TV look it's UHD and 30p usually.

Just so the folks out there without a GH4 who are wondering about aspect ratios..... You are actually shooting the native Academy 1.85:1 ratio then masking to 2.40:1 in post, as the GH4 does not shoot a native 2.40:1 aspect ratio, correct?
