Who's heard this rumor?

So I just started college, I'm dorming, and people keep bringing up this rumor. Everyone thinks that the food people put laxatives in the food. People in the administration deny it, my RA and other RA's confirm it. One RA said that he asked the food manager here, who said that it's standard practice in all colleges, just in case the food is bad, so it passes through you quicker and doesn't effect as many people.

I am still in denial because what if someone is allergic to the laxative? We tested it out (taking a sample group, eating at the school cafeteria one night, then at a normal restaurant the other), but our results were inconclusive. I want to hear your take on this.

Yes... it's true...laxatives for the college kids...and Ritalin for the gradeschoolers.
I also hear some High Schools are adding vodka to the drinking water!

LOL... Really, I would think it's just a tad bit illegal to drug the students.

Although this would be a great way to fight the "freshman 15"!

the laxative effect more probably comes from dirty food! unwashed hands of the employees who handle it.....take food samples to a lab and test for coli bacteria and i bet you find too many....

Take a sample to a lab. It might cost $50 to $100. Go divies on it with your friends. Throw in $10 each. Then, if it's true, you may have a lawsuit there. Just saying.

//edit: timbook2 beat me to it.

Take. it. to. a. lab.

//edit: btw, if it helps any, one of our dogs was poisoned, we suspected (no shi*). We took a bone from our yard for a lab sample and it turned up as strictnine. Upon further investigation thanks to my father sending a message to the local paper, it turns out this had been happening for about 10 years. Many dogs in the area had been poisoned. We sort of knew who was behind it, and my dad was ready to take a shotgun and blow his head off, but, as luck would have it, they moved out within about 6 months. Nothing having been proven.

//Oh, that was about 20 years ago. Not one dog poisoning death that I know of in this neighbourhood since. Huh!

LAB IT and quite speculating, is the thing to do. Then you'll know one way or the other.

Heard this rumor about college food.

Also heard it relating to the military - allegedly, the gum in MREs is a laxative because the food has very low fiber content. As far as I know, that's also untrue.

I think it's probably because of the students' bodies not being used to the cheap oils, fats, and greases with which the cafeterias douse the food.

Cafeterias generally do not cook with very high quality ingredients, because they have to serve so much food... most of which gets thrown out at the end of the day.

Not to be a pain, but we had this in jail too.

It really felt like they were spiking out mashed potatoes.
As soon as we all ate them, we all just felt dead tired and slept for a couple hours.
It just seemed too coincidental. After awhile we caught on and looked for the effects.
Yep, every time.

They had a name for the drug but I can't remember now what it was. Started with a 'P' I think

Wouldn't surprise me in the least.

I've heard it and I don't really doubt it, however I've not really looked into it that much because I never really cared if they did or did not. The snopes article was interesting, but we are not talking about medication or prescription drugs. Laxatives can be an over the counter chemical or even just a simple food additive and etc. There are many NATURAL laxatives that simply can be added. I don't think they would ever do prescription grade. :P

I don't know if that actually works, as I am not a dietitian or food poisoning expert.

by the way, the company is Aramark. If that makes any difference.

LOL.

Aramark is a piece of shi*.

I remember when our cafeteria in elementary school made all their food from scratch! It was amazing! I never had to pack a lunch until the 3rd grade, when Aramark took over...

Then all the food turned into sickening greasy slop.

I remember teachers getting in trouble for ordering pizza while on the clock. PIZZA. Because it defied the contract the school had signed with Aramark. If you wanted pizza, you had to order Aramark pizza, not Pizza Hut.

If only restaurants like Subway or Burger King (f* McDonald's) got into the game before Air-of-crap took over...

I've taken to eating military MRE's that a friend of mine gets me...they're a tad tasty, and you only spend 5 minutes per week in the bathroom. I get more work done these days as a result. Feels like i'm giving birth when i do go, but the benefits far outweigh the risk IMO.
