who shoots w/ naked fs100 -no rails/rigging/matte box/monitor?

Me!

I'm drawn to the image the fs100 produces but not the big/busy-ness of the rigging (snip)

Exactly. My interviewees have described the FS100 as 'cute' - not toylike, not naff, not unprofessional, but cute. Professional and cute. They like it BECAUSE it's not bristling with bits. Yes, as someone who purchased a mattebox as a 'codpiece' for his EX1 due to ribbing from some clients, I was surprised. Times change.

The only time I experienced a similar shift was when I (as a student) switched from 35mm to Medium Format, first a TLR (Yashicamat) then an SLR (Bronica ETR-S). It just felt a little less confrontational.

Okay, I am NOT a fan of the side handle. Got rid of that, now use a simple handgrip (and strictly speaking, the lens's 'petal' lens hood SHOULD have been on the lens):

I don't like the chimney, I will buy an EVF very soon, but most of the time, I love taking the FS100 out just like a medium format camera: body, lens, that's it. Just wish there was a built in mic so I could use a Zoom H1 or H4 for the actual sound and have the camera sound for sync. Still looking out for a discrete mic for that.

But the point is that I still build it up for other uses - EVF, monitor, recorder, soon somewhere to hang radio mics when Mr Crosby's handle arrives (hint!). Matte box only for shots that need ND grad or pola as I prefer Vari-ND. But I can still strip it and treat it like a home movie camera when I want to.

Dermott,

It should only be 2-4 days now with any luck. My estimate was about 10 days optimistic back in sept when I took orders. I originally forecast 2-3 weeks for shipping and it turned out to be a month. Not criminal forecasting anyway! DPs do pride themselves on accurate time estimates no matter. Woe is me!! I am not worthy. ;)

Atleast it's done right and on the way. let us know how you like it. Ah hell. let ME know mate!!

I'm anxious to hear.

Just reach into holster and start stealing souls.

Inadvertent hi-jack there. Sorry. So I like to shoot bare back but not w/o a top handle. I need it to be ready when in standby mode waiting for action, being ready to react. I need it with any handheld, low or hi, it's required. To access the menus and let my fingers walk around the buttons I have to have it. OK, bare back no saddle yes- but gotta have that bridle.

That's just me- I make handles for a reason. Their critical to how I shoot.

I just picked up the FS100 a few weeks ago. I've been a loyal Sony fan since the beginning of my career. I'm in corporate video and my clients are mainly all Run and Gun. Some have told me and I've read that the FS100 isn't the greatest for Gorilla shooters. I'm not really having a problem with it and I'm blown away on how good some of the "gulp" Auto settings are! I carry all my gear on planes so I need to be light and small. The only thing I added to my rig is a handle. I got this for around $60 and with one modification of drilling a second hole in it to screw into 2 of the bottom holes of my FS100. I love this rig. The handle is solid. I carry around the whole rig from this handle.

My talent is about 5 feet tall and I'm 6'3" so shoulder rigs won't work. I find this easy to hold and I don't have to do squats all day. Focusing isn't bad with Peaking turned on. DOF isn't needed so the kit lens is just fine. Clients are impressed because they have never seen a camera this shape before and when they see the picture quality of the final product there is no question.

I have that same handle. Got it an eon ago for a canon GL2. It's good kit- but if you try one of my custom jobs
that are center weighted and on the keel line of the rig- you'll like it.

Hey, time out guys - geek pow-wow here: Gorilla: Big heavy chap who swings between peace and displays of intimidation and violence if so provoked, also has patent on opening bananas in a very cool way. Guerrilla: 'little war', small independent units with focused objectives able to move within the gaps of a bigger oppressive regime.

We are guerrilla shooters. We do not open bananas or hang out with Dian Fossey or Jane Goodall.

Cigar - big smoky thing, cigarillo - diminuitive version thereof. Guerra - war/fight/battle, Guerrilla = diminuitive pluralist version thereof. Hang on, is a member of a guerrilla film school a guerrillo?
