White Balancing

Besides the thread about presets, I haven't seen anything about this topic in specific.

When it comes to White Balancing, is there any way to expect the 'outcome' after I WB on a color that isn't white? Say I focus on a red wall and white balance, what look should I expect? Will the look change?

I messed around with the WB the other day. I noticed slight changes, but nothing eye opening.

Thanks!

When you white balance to a color other than white, you'll get that color's exact opposite in the image. Balance to green, you get magenta. Balance to magenta, you get green. Balance to orange, you get blue. Balance to blue, you get orange. And so on...

yup...what he said...to get warmer colours you white balance on cooler colours and vise versa. so white balancing on red gives u a cooler colour (blue). different shades/intensities of the colour which u white balance on will yeild the the equal intensity shade in the opposite colour. So for example there are different grade warm cards (blue cards of different shades). The darker blue will give u a warmer tone and lighter blue a less warm tone ect.

my advice....buy some warm cards and always balance to them, or at the least carry around one piece of white paper that you always balance to.

I tend to not mess around much with warming things up or cooling them down, and like to just white balance to one universal card, then tinker with things in post.

One thing I try not to do is depend on white balance pre-sets......I like to white balance often, and manually.

Of course this is just my method, MoSt of the time...play around....heck with proper balancing, out in the woods, you can do some pretty good day for night, that is often easier, faster, and looks better then doing it in post.

Definitely. I always have an index card on hand, but I never really tinkered with WBing to warm or cool colors. I'll definitely experiment now!

Thanks guys!
