White balance and overexposure

I've been trying to determine if subtle shifts in WB might help overexposure to some degree. I just shot these quick snaps using the capture function on the AF with a stop exposure increase between each photo in the series. I find myself liking more and more the color checker balance card for white balance (Right side of frame ) as it tends to be a touch more neutral and calm down the red channel a bit. It is a trade off as faces look a bit less warm but I feel like i can use a bit more exposure without clipping in skin tones if I want to .

I am not sure exactly what you are saying here Mark but I am interested to know if you can explain your theory a little more.

I'm thinking about combatting color clipping and looking at was to avoid that, especially in skin tones, so I am trying some slightly different White balances to see what effect they might have.

white balance setting cause channels to clip at a different point during debayer. happens on dslr's ... red ... stills ... etc. CMOS

I think the biggest challenge is mixed color temp sources in the same frame , so while your subject might look bang on, some other highlight of a different color temp in the frame might clip sooner than the subject or vice versa.

Pick up a color meter and gel the mixed lighting to match the predominant source. Should be able to find one on eBay for not much.

uh Yeah. Have color meter, know how to use it ,and do . Sometimes we are put into situations where we can't act on the information our color meter tells us and this is why I want to know where the boundaries are, and just how much elasticity those boundaries have.

Using WB preset 5.6K in your actual shoots? I've avoided that because of magenta caste noted in other threads.

I threw in the 5.6 k preset here as a comparison value that was easily duplicated. I have used that preset to good effect at times and don't think its completely useless. It does have a war ish magenta cast which is pretty plain to see in the stills especially on the wall behind the charts. The xrite color checker card seems to Do a really good job of placing the AF In a neutral white balance which is slightly cooler than the presets but often times seems a bit truer to eye with the skin tones of the subjects, at least the ones I have shot recently.
