Which wide angle lens do you use?

I am looking to buy a wide angle lens and would like your input. Something to use with a 60D or 7D. The two that got my attention the most are the Sigma 8-16mm(4.5-5.6F) and the Tokina 11-16mm(2.8F). Any of you used either one, will I have too much image distortion from the 8mm?

the Tokina wide angle lenses (the 11-16 and the 12-24) are both great lenses.

I would definitely recommend either one.

I have heard that the Sigma is good (I have no first-hand experience), but I would rather have the 2.8 over the variable 4.5-5.6. 11mm is plenty wide IMO

Stay away from Sigma. The Tokina 11-16 rocks but I'd suggest renting it first to see if you really need that focal length range.

I have the older EF 17-35mm L f2.8 and have been super pleased with the results both for video and stills. I'm not a big fan of barrell distortion and the 17mm of this lens is about as much as I can take. I think all the samples of the Tokina 11-16 show way too much distortion for my taste.

In any case here's a sample I shot mostly on my new prototype stabilizer. Most is shot at 17mm. The shot of the snipes is at 35mm with the new T3i zoom function and the last shot is again on the stabilizer and at 35mm, f2.8 and 1/60th with two ND4 filters.

In any case it should give an idea of what that lens does on a T3i.

Cheers,
Pete

I seem to favor the 8mm, but I will mostly use it for video and recording people for indie films. If I am going to get a distorted image though at the 8 to 10mm range then I might go for the Tokina 11-16mm which will give me a 2.8f. Did anyone do comparison tests with these two lenses? They both seem to have good reviews on B&H's website.

I bought the Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5. If I had the money, I would've got the Tokina 11-16mm as I've not heard anything negative about it.

I think for video, 8mm might actually be too wide. For stills, (which is what the 8-16mm was designed for) a rectilinear lens gives amazing perspective. Add motion to the mix, and the distortion becomes really apparent. Objects in the corners of the frame appear to change shape as the camera moves around.

If find 10mm too wide for any shots with people of motion, but great for landscapes and establishing shots.
