Which shot looks better? (White Balancing Act)

ha ha.. well.. i see your point..

not a movie however.. just a promo dvd for a clothing store.. that guy is the owner and designer of the clothing line..

i feel confused now tho, cuz i really thought the second shot looked like crap, regardless of what is meant for.

The second shot doesn't look scrap, just much warmer.

The first one is a little too cold and too green!

All depends on the light sources. I see that there is neon lights. These lights are about 4400k.

If the white balance is set at 3200k, the scene will appear too cold, with some green. If the white balance is at 5600k, it will be too warm.

He could have used additional lighting or make a custom white balance.

But you can fine tune the white balance in post. Just try to bring the first one warmer and the second one colder and see which one is the best.

i don't like either :)

i am joking...slightly..because honestly the first one is too blue and the second is too yellow. and i'm not concerned about the room..it's the actor in the frame. did you light the actor? that's the light you should white balance to, not the room..granted it's a commercial right and so the store is what's important, but the actor is what people will connect with first.

man i am not explaining that too well...

if you purposely want the scene blue or yellow then i understand. however the first shot looks cold and stark. the second shot looks like it might be night time (granted it just might be night, but why the shades? i guess i'm not that cool )

anyway...light your actors, white balance to that then light the room. but i know the footage is already done and i've jumped in way late on this...i'm just giving my opinion :)

I CC'ed the RAW grab in PS and got this:

ok well we didnt light the actor because he's not an actor, just the store owner. this is just footage to be used amongst many other clips for a promo dvd... it's supposed to be showing a party that was actually going on at the clothing store.. it wasnt staged or anything at all..

my issue isnt really whether or not i can fix the second shot in post... it's if i should tell my camera guy to avoid yellow/dark looking shots as i prefer the slightly blueish whites ..
