Which one has less rolling shutter? A7r2 or A7s in crop mode?

Which one has less rolling shutter?

- A7r2 in FF mode
- A7s in s35mm mode 1080p or 4K external
- A7s2 in s35mm mode 1080p

I cannot seem to find good info on this.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but it seems like an odd question considering which each camera is designed for. A7R2 is going to have the least rolling shutter and best quality in its S35 mode, that's the shooting mode it's optimized for. I think Cinema5D actually did some detailed analysis of this. But rolling shutting in general is not great on this camera.

A7s wouldn't technically be able to do 4k external in S35 mode and its optimized shooting mode is FF. It does shoot lovely FF 1080P, not a fan of S35 mode with this camera.

A7s2 in S35 crop mode is not really what the camera is optimized for. Like the A7S, it's optimized for Full Frame shooting.

I have seen any articles about rolling shutter on the A7s or A7s2. I owned the A7s and found the rolling shutter to not be nearly as bad as the A7r2. It's awful in FF mode on the A7r2 and mostly usable in S35 mode if you are stabilized or not filming crazy fast motion. Biggest liability of the camera imo is the rolling shuttle and funny motion cadence you get out of it.

You have those backwards, RS is much worse in s35 mode on the A7rII compared to FF.

To MacGregor, here's the results from the A7s HD in crop (good) and FF (bad) mode:

It can get confusing, s35 is cleaner and more detailed, FF has less RS. At times it can be frustrating....
It makes sense because RII has to process/oversample 15 MPX to then produce a 4K (8.8 MPX) image. In full frame, it skips/bins, which makes it faster but at a loss of resolution (purported to be closer to 2.5K).

With A7s series, the fewer pixels it reads, the less time it needs to read them. Ergo, it's faster in a crop mode with less RS.

From the modes he's asking about, he's looking for the fastest possible rolling shutter on an a7 body, independently of how sharp or clean it is.

I don't have numbers for the a7S II, but I do have the others, over here. If anybody has an a7S II and runs the test I describe there in each available mode, I can add it to the table.

a7s APS-C 1080p - 19.5 ms (20.3-18.4-19.5-19.5)
a7R II 4K FF ---- 19.9 ms (19.3-19.6-19.4-21.2)
a7s FF 1080p ---- 30.5 ms (30.1-32.0-30.5-30.3-29.2-30.9)
a7R II 4K S35 --- 34.0 ms (35.6-32.2-32.8-35.3)
