Which ND filter for GH2 (14-140 and 20mm)

don't buy cheap ND filters, they just soften your image and affect color. I have the LCW MK2 vari-nd and it works nice...

Yeah I am willing do drop a bit of coin as I will have some full sun video to shot for a project soon. Looking over LCW's site now.

Also do you think I will need a ND for both lenses? I assume that in bright, outdoor, light I will be using the 14-140 more but I just love the 20mm (mostly indoor and night time shooting).

Thanks,

The LCW is pretty good. You could get a 62mm one for the 14-140 and a step up ring from 46mm to 62mm to use it with the 20mm lens as well. I'd also suggest getting some kind of screw-on lens hood to cut down on diffraction, which can be a problem esp with the variable filters since they have two pieces of glass. The LCW, I believe, has a 67mm thread on the out-facing side of the 62mm Fader-ND.

I have 2 LCW faderNDs...a 62mm for the 14-140, and a 52mm for the pancake with a 46-52 step-up ring.

I use both equally.

BE WARNED THOUGH - as you go past 50mm the image softens up a lot. A SingRay would be better for these purposes, but I find the LCWs great for under 50mm work. A must have.

Is there a reason not to use the 62 with a 46 to 62 setp-up ring on the 20mm?

Edit: I can't seem to find a 46->62 step-up ... so I guess that is the answer :)

Edit2: So I see in this thread (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?236738-variND-for-Panny-Pancake-lens) that you can get away with using a step-down ring and a smaller size filter due to the mirco 4/3 having a smaller sensor.

So would a 58mm LWC Fader ND:

With a 62->58 step down work with my 14-140mm:

http://www.amazon.com/Adorama-Step-...5?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1296746321&sr=1-5

And with a 46->58 step work with my 20mm:

Thanks,

I'm going to guess vignetting

K you're getting all messed up.

I have the 77mm LCW vari ND and then use step rings to adapt to different lenses. 77 to 62 step ring for the 14-140. Then a 77 to 52, then 52 to 46 step RINGS for the lumix 20. Then you should also buy a 3 stop ND filter that can adapt the same way. The vari Nd can ruin skies by polarizing them, so the solid 3 stop ND will come in handy for outdoor stuff where the vari ND fails...

I have the LCW ND Filter 62mm and a step up ring directly from 62 to 46. It works very fine and it's easy to change if you need it fast. I have also a step up ring from 62 to 52 for my olympus 9-18 and my nokton 25mm f0,95. Great combi i think. :D One ND Filter for all lenses.

I had to get two rings for that step up. Where did you get that step up ring?

So I want to pick up a ND filter for use with my GH2 mainly for video work (with 14-140 and 20mm). What do you folks recommend?

I think a variable one would be best; how is the Fader ND filter?

http://www.amazon.com/Fader-Variabl...NI/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1296699884&sr=8-12

I was in the same boat, so I checked out this thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?237127-DIY-Fader-ND-CP-LP

and this: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?184467-Fader-ND-amp-Vari-ND&highlight=marumi

and ended up getting this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003QSG0HK/ref=oss_product and this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009R9ED/ref=oss_product

which people say is equivalent to this: http://www.singh-ray.com/varinduo.html but 1/4 the price! (ie. ND filtrations + Polarization).

Didn't recive it yet, but looking forward to trying it out soon. I got a 77mm pair of filters, just in case i go bigger in the future (and to avoid vignetting i hope, on the wide side of the 14-140).

I found some great reviews on CPL filters here: http://www.lenstip.com/115.4-article-Polarizing_filters_test_Results_and_summary.html

Anyhow, that about covers my last 3 weeks of research. Hope this helps. Good luck!

If you're not run n gunning, I think it's well worth getting a nice selection of non-variable ND filters, cheaper and no quality loss. For narrative filmmakers I think the decision is simple. But I can totally appreciate how practical it is for a variable ND if you're doing docu-style stuff.

I bought this one to use on the 100-300. I used it in the ECT mode, and the image quality was beyond horrible. It was amazingly bad. I’ll try it again for a few stills and video not in the ECT mode to see if that affected it. The lack of an ND filter is tolerable in this dreary winter weather, but when there is sun, one really is needed.

I have the 14-140 lens and 20mm pancake so if take the LCW ND filter 62mm http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003RDNKUY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A3WMDSE310L4C
What kind of step up ring i need ? i don't understand how you calculate guys ?

The 14-140 is 62mm filter size (check the spec on B&H). The 20mm is 46mm filter size. Therefore a 62mm LCW ND filter fits the 14-140 natively and a 46->62 step-up is needed for the 20mm. The issue is the 46->62 is kinda hard to find. I grabbed a 46->62 from Europe for like $30 shipped to Texas. For less you can use 2 step ups to get from 46 to 62.

Also note that the LCW ND filters have different filter sizes on the front and back. For example the 62mm LCW ND is 62mm on the back and 67mm on the back. This is important if you are getting a lens hood to fit on the LCW. I picked this one up for a few bucks:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0029LH3TE

It works wells as it is adjustable and can be used at 14mm all the way up to 140mm.

Good luck!
