Which mac?

I have completely given up on Windows now, and have finally decided to make the switch to mac. I've been considering an 20" imac, as I cant really afford a mac pro, even from ebay. I would then use a secondary monitor also, and probably up the ram to 8gb.

My questions are...

Will a 2.4ghz processor be enough for avchd? As all of the 20" ones on ebay seem to be 2.4.

Or should I pay abit more and get a 20" brand new with a 2.66ghz processor, as I would also like this to last me a few years so Im not too bothered about paying the extra to buy new.

And....the older imacs, which have the 2.4ghz processor, whats the maximum ram they can run?

Thanks!

what are you planning to do? i have a macbook pro with 2.4ghz cpu and 2gigs of ram (going to upgrade to 4gb soon) it works fine in final cut pro when converted to dvcpro. but in motion and stuff its really slow. basic editing in final cut (color corection, cuting, adding music, ect) its enough, but for 3d and very hard task you need more power.

Even better, Ive found a 24" of the previous generation, only £50 more than the 20" 2.6 of the latest generation, same version of leopard installed as the newer ones, 2.8ghz processor, and I can get 12% discount. How does that sound?

Because you have to transcode to pro res or AIC with FCP, any Intel iMac will be sufficient.

Transcode times depend on CPU, but the difference between 2.4 and 2.6 GHz is minimal.

Get RAM and best GPU and fastest external FW HDD.
