FS7: which lightmeter for fs7

Best thing is to read the manuals for each one and see exactly what one offers over the other.

At a glance it looks like both meters let you set frames per second which is good for starters, but the big differences as I see it is that the L-308 uses an add on Lumidisc which seems easy to lose, break, or make dirty. The L-358 let's you simply lower the lumisphere to give you the same function.

Also one important feature to look for on any meter (in my opinion) is a meter that let's you put a meter reading into memory, then take a second meter read and have the meter tell you the contrast ratio. Sure you can just do two meter reads in a row and calculate the f-stop difference and hence contrast ratio in your head, but I like when a light meter can just do this for you. It's a fast way to look at your lighting contrast ratio without having to think too much.

The manual for the L-308 says it has a "contrast" mode (page 24) which would give you that function, but again it needs that Lumidisc added for it to work. Not a deal breaker but I wouldn't like a meter that needs "pieces" for it to work. That's just me. It's still a great meter that does the job without any B.S.

A look at used prices:

L-308 - $200
L-358 - $300
L-508 - $350-$400

L-508 is the one I use. The big advantage of this light meter is it has a zoom lens built in that let's you look through it and take a spot meter read. (reflected light not incident obviously). This is handy for measuring light reflected off a surface or subject that might be further away, or ceilings, people, etc.. anything really. It's also very easy to use like the L-308 or L-358. For example many find the L-758 too complicated because it's digital over the top with far too much functionality, loadable profiles, etc..

Get the L-508 if you feel like splurging, you won't regret it, but really any of these meters will do the job.
