lookin to invest in some good zeiss glass that I can use for the rest of my life... now that they make ZE canon mount glass it is time. I mostly shoot documentary/indie film stuff... but I am also working on my photography skill my GF is a photographer and we are teaching each other our skills. any ways I was thinkin the 35mm and 50mm seeing as how they are the cheapest and could get 2. But I use my 24mm often now. But I was thinking I have that 24 for now why not get some bigger glass instead of replacing the size I have now just because it is better? But I do a lot of studio and location photo shoots and I know people love the 85mm. Any ways gonna get some glass for christmas so whatcha think...

They're great lenses, but they're manual. Look into the ZF.2 series, they have more electronic connections in 'em.

Keep in mind the dreaded "crop factor"; you said lots of people love the 85mm, but -- do they love the 85 on a "full frame" body? If so, you'd get comparable results from the 50mm.

The 85 is sweet sweet sweet. The 50/1.4 is my least favorite of the bunch, it gets soft and bloomy and lots of purple/green fringing when wide open. Well, truth be told, they all do, but the 50/1.4 does so to an excessive degree as compared to the rest of them. I seriously considered selling it off and getting the 50mm/2.0 Macro lens, but ... a lot of the bloominess and chromatic aberration go away when you stop the 1.4 down to 2.0 anyway, so... is there that much of a difference? And the 1.4 is half the price, and it CAN go to 1.4 if you need it, so ... I'll probably stick with it.

The ZF.2 lenses look to be the same glass, more electrical contacts, and about $150 to $250 more per lens.

Thanks Barry a help as usual yeah I dont need AF I never use it anyways. But the F-Stop is electronic on the ZE series that just came out... seeing as how they are canon based EOS mount. But yeah I know the 5D people love the 85mm so I should get the 50 if I want similar range of the 85mm?
