Which codec and container for delivering files via FTP or download?

Is there any standard for delivering files (SD) to broadcasters?
Not as a big posthouse, but let´s say you have some archive footage a broadcaster wants to use in a report and he needs it fast and editable.
What keeps files size and traffic low, is editable without transcoding or demuxing and offers a decent enough quality for Broadcasting (labled as "archive footage"...)
Sending a digibeta tape is NOT an option;-)

Thanks!

I'de go with Quicktime with either the Photo Jpg or Animation codec. The Animation codec will result in large file sizes, but there won't be a artifacting, as it is lossless. The Photo jpg codec will have smaller file size, but there is compression on it.

There are a ton of losslesss codecs out there, I'de start by Google>"lossless codec" and take a peek at which is the best for your needs.

fed ex what you got!!!
unless you got a super fast fiber optic or personal satlaite transmiter your on the max of 6 meg or 8 meg in parts of the california.
capture files are big enough if not un compresses !!
so im sayin fed ex your stuff for quality assurence the web will take and trunkit make do with as it pleases kinda thing.
i ftp and up load for download on my server all the time, but i only upload finished clips small file size for sharing thats all
a dvx tape alone is 10 15 gigs apeice with small compression all ready so imagine uploading that, math time ok 1 gig every 45 minutes, dont even just fed ex ,use the mail soem creative way to save time
i whould capture to external drive in a shareble codect ,mail it for 20$ and negotiate cost!!
fast convienant for lage files and higher quality.
the web is just painfull for dsl or 3 meg speeds!!

use the mail!!!!!!real old school mail
or a pigeon if thats your style

Thanks for all the replys!
Sending out a tape or a DVD is how it has been handled so far, but this often takes too long.
I´m researching on this for a NGO that simply wants their material as easy to get for broadcasters as it gets.
So quality must still be good and evrybody should be able to use it without installing codecs aso...
I guess it would have to come down to an .avi file with a more or less lossless codec (but which?).
I was also thinking about a QT file with jpeg2000 compression as used for delivery by the DCI,but I´ll have to further investigate on this...

Spartacus,
Don't know how long (minutes) you footage is, but I normally upload commercials via ftp for broadcast here in L.A. I encode as MPEG2 at 15-18mbs so that it can be directly encoded into their system at optimum quality. I know you mentioned not transcoding, but this might just be an option for you. My on-air results with this system have been far better than the old "give us a BetaSP and we'll do the rest" setup.
Hope this helps,
