C100: Which Canon should i get for C100

Wedding shooter here, and 24-105 is my go to (and it stays on) because of the run & gun style of shooting. If on a tri/monopod for the ceremony, then I may throw on the 70-200 2.8.

I got my hand on canon 70-200 F4 and 17-55 F2.8. I am happy with them. I am selling my phantom 3 Pro and maybe i will use the money for a monitor for my camera.

People write off the 18-135STM and its siblings way too quickly. On paper, it looks like a dog, but in practice it is my favorite lens for general videography. I use only 18-135, the 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 for the vast majority of my shoots. I own most of the rest of the available lenses, but they only come out for special occasions. The STM lenses are so cheap that I don't know why people don't just pick them up and give them a try. Set the C100 to compensate for aperture, set the lens to f/5.6, turn on the IS, and just go out and shoot handheld. It will change your idea of what you think is possible to capture with the camera for event videography.

Exactly how I use it. Shot BTS for Homeland in South Africa, that was my main lens and I captured amazing footage with it. I am not crazy about run and gun shooting but when you are on a movie or TV set, that's mostly what it is. Used the 70-200 2.8 IS for my sit down interviews but for running around the set, 18-135 STM IS was a lifesaver, I could put it on the camera and shoot all day withough changing lenses. Wish it didn't go out of focus during zooms and I hate focus by wire but other than those limitations, it's a solid choice for an all arounder.

That's a good combo. What would you say your most-used lens is? The 24-70? I use the Tamron 24-70 and it stays on my C100 most of the time. The optics admittedly aren't quite as good as the Canon 24-70, but they're close, and the Tamron 24-70 comes with IS, so it's a nice compromise for run-n-gun. And it's 2.8. I used to use the 18-135 STM IS but it's slowness kept getting in the way for me. Yeah, you can compensate by using a higher ISO, but I really like to stay under 2500 on the C100 or the noise starts to become more apparent.

Believe it or not, lately I have been shooting a lot of interviews, shot green screen interviews yesterday for a big CBS show and I began with the Canon 85mm 1.8 but producer wanted a wide FOV in the cramped room we were shooting in so I ended up shooting the interviews with the cheapo Canon 50mm 1.8 STM, looked amazing, that is a very sharp, cheap lens. I may be shooting some more EPK/BTS TV shows on set, which will be mostly dark interiors, other than the lit sets themselves. If that happens, I will rent and alternate between the 24-70 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8 IS. Both lenses are magic on the C100 but I am waiting to see what happens with a potential contract. If I land this, I will be on several shows shooting all of the EPK and BTS and I will be buying both of those lenses and a C300 MKII, unless producers are stuck on the F55. I would rather rent but I may be on a single show for 24 shoot days, it is making sense to buy because that show will pay for the C300 MKII and lenses and then the subsequent shows will be pure profit on my rental charge to the client. I can sell the C300 MKII off in a year to get whatever other flavor of the month there will be then. But that's the way to do it, pay for a C300MKII package with one job.

I agree, the Canon 50mm 1.8 STM is a great lens. I use it frequently in various low-light situations and it's a champ. For less than 150 bucks, it's a no-brainer for your lens bag.
