Which Canon Model would you suggest me?

oh we wrote at the same time deepfocus :)

are you talking about the standard lens that comes with the body
Canon EOS 550D + EF-S 18-55mm IS.

The problem is here that the apperture is variable. Or not?

EDIT: deepfocus, i have a nikon 50mm 1.4, but i think it's not possible atach on a canon :(

You would do well to go with a good wide angle f 2.8 lens like a Canon 17-55 or a Tamron 17-50 and also a good telephoto f 2.8 lens like a Sigma 70-200. Having two lenses like these, with constant apertures, will give you a good range to shoot with, from wide angle to telephoto close ups.

Hi, somebody wrote here that the sigma 70-200 is crappy. Is that true??? If yes should i buy a canon lens? Please help

If is really true that the 550d has same video quality and options like shutter speed, formats, etc. then i think that i buy the 550 because is cheaper and invest on the canon lens:

550d body: 858 $
Canon EF-S 17-55mm 2.8 IS USM 1147 $
Canon EF 70-200 mm f/2.8 L USM 1500 $

I think that's a smart move. The trendiest cameras will always come and go but the lens you invest in today can last you for a lifetime. So shop smart.

ok, i will take the 550d. This lens: Canon EF 70-200 mm f/2.8 L USM 1500 $

is not IS. Is this a problem for movies?

as long as you are prepared to use a tripod, or other similar stabilizing supoort, using non IS is fine. In fact , if you have IS, you will want to turn it off when being on a tripod.

Now, that being said, if you ever plan on shootiing with the camera being only hand held, you should try and get IS if you can afford it.

thank you for your feedback of my work.

great ok i will spend 1'150 $ for the Canon EF-S 17-55mm 2.8 IS USM. Now i have "only" to choose the right model 7d or 550d. This is the most dificult part :(
I don't want to make a mistake and say a few month after.. shi* i should have bought the other one :)

If you have extra cash you may consider getting 2 550D's for the same price as one 7D. If you are shooting live music 2 cameras will be much better than one for seamless cutaways. Also with the heating issue which is real you can alternate bodies when needed

Just for reference, I have a 5D and used only a 24-70 2.8 L for a long time. I've since purchased more lenses but...

...translation...

I think that if you get either the 550D or the 7D, you can probably just buy the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS now and be just fine! Then, after you figure out what shots you can't get with that camera/lens, go out and buy another lens.

You get one great lens and still have money later to expand your options. And you might just find that the lens you need/want is at the other end (11-16 rather than 70-200).

Hi Etrust...

I hate to throw a wrench in to your thread...but your work is Great! Very nicely done...and, IMO, you'd benefit MORE from investing in a nice, pre-owned HVX or HPX...around 3k with a P2 card, then use the extra thousand to pick up the 550/T2i+18-55 kit lens to fart around with in decent light.

I agree with ALL the posters in this thread that glass is your most important weapon...However, jumping in to DSLR shooting with ONLY a body and glass is a struggle at best...at worst, it's a nightmare! You must factor in stabilization (Tripod, body support....monopod, et al.), sound recording (especially since you are focusing on music and music videos), lighting....are you all set up for Post Production with these files? I'm sure you see where I'm going...

I've been using the 5d2 for almost two years now....and about 9 months with the 7d...and I would NEVER show up at one of my shots without one of my video cameras....yet:) I love my DSLRs, don't get me wrong...it's just the limitations and ammenities you give up when your forgo a pro or prosumer video camera and opt for only a DSLR.

YMMV, for sure...many are using them and quite successfully...but I'll be honest...I bought my 5d2 and 24-105....only to have to spend another 4 grand, eventually, to be comfortable shooting, focusing, and getting a stable shot with good sound on my DSLR. Again, your mileage may vary, and times have changed since I first bought my 5d2...many more third party companies are jumping on the bandwagon and building nice accessories...however, There is a viable reason Zacuto and RedRock cost money....there products are outstanding, and built to withstand the rigors of shooting.

...again, just another thought....and it still gets you a DSLR. Maybe even a second hand DVX, but of course, that would be shooting SD. Just seems to me you have some talent (from seeing your work), and I know the frustrations that come in to play when having to rely on just a DSLR for the shot.

Good Luck

J
