im considering getting avid. I have little knowledge on it at all. On the website, there are several kinds of avid.

Which one do you actually use for video editing?

Also, how well does avid work with Macs?

Well your question is pretty vague.

Media composer software is the software part of the AVID system which you can run on pc or mac. Then if you want, you can get the hardware IE mojo etc to further enchance the performance depending on your needs.

this is just my understanding, as I am in the same boat as you and don't know much about avid. I am thinking about all my options. I just don't know if spending thousands on a mac is worth it for me. AHHH.

vague, yes. I have little to no understanding about avid. I am doing my research though.

I primarily use premiere cs3. unfortunetely, from what i've been reading, FCP seems to be the choice of software for production. Then of course avid being the main holder in the market and the one i would like to familiarize myself with.

i decided on the mac due to the actual hardware. 32gb of ram. 1.5gb of gpu. dual quad-core
i wouldnt have that much, but enough to get by.
Also, i could have all 3 nle's on one computer. So, it could only be beneficial, right? in the long run, that is...

ya,
thats exactly what I am thinking, with a pc I can run Avid and Adobe, but with a Mac I can run all 3. But then again, if I go the pc for cheap route, I can also get a macbook pro and run FCP on that. And then I could still feed my small gaming addiction haaha. Who knows.

If clientele warrents an Avid product, get the best suited for that cleintele. Otherwise, there is simply no reason to do it nowadays. The freelance market digs FCP editors, your overhead hates Avid in general and most clients just don't care what ya cut their product on now.

da truth

If I were you, I'd get the software only version of Media Composer. You can always add on a mojo or adrenaline box later. The beauty of the software is that you can install it on either a p.c. or a mac, or both. To go from one machine to another, you just need to plug in the dongle. Avid was originally developed for the Mac and that's my preferred platform.

And by the way, I wouldn't listen to the FCP fanboys on this site. If you want to be respected as a professional editor, you need to know Avid.

I was going to build a Mac Pro. I Found it to be cheaper to buy a standard one and add on later. That, and it runs all 3 popular NLE's. Does MOJO help in real time editing/rendering

The only thing that sucks about AVID and someone correct me if I'm wrong, you can't do HD monitoring on HD monitors unless you have MOJO DX which is like $10,000. With Premiere and FCP, you can do it for $1000 with a BlackMagic Decklink Extreme HD or for a little more with an AJA card - but that's still nowhere near MOJO DX cost.

AVID MC doesnt' support Blackmagic and AJA cards. You have to use AVID's hardware.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here. I don't want to spread false information.

Thanks!

You're not wrong about Mojo being the cheapest way to monitor HD on Avid, but you have the price wrong. MojoDX is about $7K. Still expensive, yes, but not 10K. If you have an old Mojo you can trade it in for credit and get MojoDX for about $6 or $6.5K.

I was using this for pricing.

I'm assuming that WITH Avid Media Composer 3 and that's why it's almost $10K. Mojo DX (the hardware itself) is cheaper, around $7K?

So if you have the software version of Avid Media Composer, you can just buy the Mojo DX later for $7K, correct?
