Where to get out-of-warranty gear serviced? (Marantz PMD661 specifically)

For no apparent reason, my Marantz PMD661 stopped working last week. It simply won't turn on, with batteries or the power adapter. Since it's a little more than a year old, Marantz won't have anything to do with servicing it. I'm in New Orleans, Louisiana and there doesn't seem to be an authorized third-party service center here.

Marantz recommended All Star Electronics in Tampa, Florida, but I'm a little wary about using them. I called All Star. After describing the situation, they said they had no idea what the problem was, but that it would cost about $250 to repair. Sounds like they'll charge me $250 even if it's something simple.

Can anyone recommend a trustworthy repair center? Where do you take your out-of-warranty gear? I have a job coming up very soon and I need to have this thing working!

If they were recommended by the manufacturer, that says something. What you're going to find with any authorized repair center is a minimum bench fee that's often a couple hundred dollars.

FYI if you bought with a gold or platinum credit card, many of the double them manufacturers warranty period

If not the Oade brothers in Georgia know their stuff, especially Marantz as they MOD/optimize them all the time. Very sociable too. I would use them anyday over an anonymous service center for a product which is out of warranty anyway.

Marantz won't even repair an out of warranty product and charge you for it? Wow. We repair out of warranty stuff all the time. I know that Coffey Sound and Location Sound in L.A. are very good, but you will have to pay a minimum bench fee...and that goes for just about any place. There is also Gotham Sound or Pro Sound Services in New York. Does DV eStore have a service department? I know Guy is pretty savvy up there. If they do, I'd trust them as well.
