Where should I go?

So I'm going to move sometime soon. I don't know where, just not here. The SF bay area is my favorite choice, but it's also pretty expensive. Not to mention we're getting seriously boned with the CA budget. I'd be happy going anywhere I can find a good enough job to pay rent. So I thought I'd ask the people here; where would be a good place to go? Let me know where you live if you prefer, what you like about it, maybe where you'd like to be or remember. Anything. Although I phrased this for myself, it doesn't have to be literally suggestions for me. They don't even have to be in the US. Or any developed country if you can sell it.

Suggestions will primarily be considered by the following:

*Housing prices
*Job market
*Climate
*City infrastructure
*Architecture
*Colorful signs
*Number of hot air balloons
*Colorfulness of hot air balloons
*Prominence of samba schools (Just for parades, I don't dance)
*Scenery
*Official language
*Numerology
*Results of casting the bones and divining the area's future

And please, don't take this topic too seriously. I'm more curious on what people have to say about the benefits of whatever places than interested in actual suggestions. Although actual suggestions are nice.

Note that Temecula is currently the only place found with a hot air balloon themed festival. Competition welcome.

It doesn't matter. That's the point, that I'm detached from not just place, but goals for a new place. I just want to get an idea of what people think of their respective areas, or areas they've been. Might help me decide which direction to head, at the very least it will be interesting to see various perspectives.

East Tennessee is fantastic. Much lower cost of living than the West Coast. Housing prices are nice (sell a 1300 square foot house in CA and buy a McMansion here). Knoxville is actually a huge production market, among other industries here. Plus the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is in our back yard.

And hot air balloons? http://www.smokymtnballoons.com/

We also have a hot air balloon festival every year at a local community college. And there are a few ballroom dance schools around here.

Downtown architecture is nice, and the downtown food/music scene is not only good but improving every day.

Chattanooga is also a great place to be. Competitive production market with Atlanta, impressive downtown culture, two major national Civil War battlefield parks.

I agree with C2V. Forget California, this place is going into the toilet. Things are just going to get worse and worse as far as state infrastructure, state benefits, gangs, immigration challenges, crime and any response or funding to combat said issues. And as far as production, I don't see production increasing here, it will continue to decrease with the stranglehold that the unions have and all of the out of state/country incentives that producers have.

If you want to work in production, other hot states for that because of the tax rebates would be...

1. Louisiana
2. Texas
3. New Mexico

and there are several other states that are looking good for feature production and as C2V alludes to, most of the Scripps television shows (HGTV) are shot in his neck of the woods. Personally, I like northern Arizona but not much production there, but it is beautiful and still semi-affordable.

Just depends on what you want to accomplish, do you want to stay in prodution or do you care about production?

I dunno. I really enjoy living in Los Angeles, but then again I am relatively well-established here.

Canada sounds like a good alternative. Health care, local economies and etc. Film production is still rather big.

Lots of wilderness in the north and lakes! When the earth runs out of water in 25 years, Canada has a mild population in comparison to fresh water. All you have to do is put up with us making fun of you.

The thing with that is that I've spent so much time making fun of Canadians I'm sure it would come back at me.

There was this Canadian kid I was in high school with, one time at a football game the band was supposed to play 'We're An American Band'. I asked him to leave.

And yeah, production work is great, but that's just one thing to think about. There are a lot of others.

Yeah, me too, lifelong Californian here (quite a rare species). Think if you were new in town, wet behind the ears and didn't have work lined up. LA is tough, as tough as NYC if you are in the same position only NYC is more expensive.

Things aren't too bad here now on a day to day, but look at what is looming, the prison releases, the healthcare crisis and all of the other fun things that come from living in a state with a 24 BILLION dollar deficit and a city that has Villaretardo (I know, so UN-PC, but I just heard him interviewed on NPR, sorry, he is a moron. He is our modern-day Richard M. Daley) as mayor. Yeesh, makes me shiver.

Canada: America's hat.

So I guess my ass is on your head, then. :) I have nothing bad to say about my time in Los Angeles, especially the last area we moved from, which was difficult to say goodbye to. But I'd been there long enough, almost 20 years, and it was time for something different.

Georgia is nice. good incentive program for movie making. But if you didnt care about film production, I would say Montana or northern Wyoming. Beautiful country out there

Nah, it's California all the way. No other state even approaches it in geographical variety, weather conditions and the combination of advanced city living next to abundant nature. You got mountains, you got deserts, you got forests, you got the ocean. I camp here 3-4 times every year - love it, love it, love it. We got more land under protection of parks than any other state (that is changing sadly, though), and a huge variety - compare that to Texas, or Utah, or Hawaii, or Alaska, or Wyoming, or Florida, or whatever - CALIFORNIA is #1!!! And can you beat the weather? Texas is too hot. Oregon too rainy. Wyoming (beautiful!) too cold. We have here in CA, what is called a Mediterranean climate - the best in the world. Los Angeles can get pretty hot, but most of the year you walk around in your T and shorts. It rarely rains here. If you want almost the exact same temperate climate all year round, never too hot, never too cold, there's always San Diego. If like a bit of rain, head north to San Francisco.

And the cities? You got beautiful San Francisco, and you got the variety of Los Angeles. I mean, yeah, Los Angeles is not exactly pretty, but I love it for the variety of people from all over the world and cuisines - only New York can rival it that way. But I love the fact that I can hop in the car and within half an hour be in beautiful nature - NY can't do that, plus the weather there sucks. And little things: we don't have the obnoxious insect problems other regions have... NY (flies, mosquitos and other bity nasties... ever tried to have an open air dinner there... right), Florida (palmetto bugs and flying cockroaches), Texas (flying cockroaches). Instead, we have some of the most beautiful gardens anywhere with wonderful birds and other non-obnoxious animals.

We have our problems. Dysfunctional government. Traffic (especially Los Angeles). Air quality.

And we have our shortcomings. We're no New York when it comes to nightlife, or most cultural life. We're a bit of a backwater.

But on balance? It's California all the freakin' way. None is better, I say, none. If you have talent, come here and make your bones. If you don't, well, it's still warm and laid back.
