Where is the D90 stronger than the 550D?

Hi folks,

I've got a D90. Some days ago I could test a Canon 550D. What I remarked:

  • The Nikkor 50mm/1.8 feels just ways better than the Canon 50mm/1.8
  • The 550D has 1080p, The D90 only 720p
  • The 550D has a very low rolling shutter, the D90's is, well, you don't want to have anything moving in your video.
  • The 550D has no stairstepping
  • The 550D has much smoother looking videos

So, where exactly is the D90 better when it comes to video? If at all?

Wait for the D90 replacement. Rumors have it that is coming soon and will be called the D95. Lets hope is a much better video camera this time.

@hkf Okay. I see. Thought so :)

@John This would really be cool. An improved D90 -- I'd immediately buy it. But some say that it should be most expensive when just released :S

I have both. 550D has better resolution, manual controls, not as much jello, way better compression...
BUT D90 has a much much nicer image imo, less digital and videoish and better colors.
Can't wait for Nikon's announcements.

if it has 1080 24p, manual controls and equal rolling shutter to the 550. I'd buy it. simply for the reason that i can reuse my old nkion lenses AND new ones on a micro 4/3 (AF100) unlike Canon's EF, you cant control the apperture...

Nikon has been working on fast continous auto focus during movie recording, apparently even the soon to be announced entry level D3100 might already have it. I'm positiv D95 will have it for sure.
Your newer Nikon lenses should be even more fun then ;)

btw, I think rolling shutter issues have already become better in D300s and D3s, I don't think it will be a bigger problem than 550D with the new Nikons.

Yeah, actually when I look back at all the D90 stuff out there... on a small 640x360 window size, the overall image quality and artistry put in look far more cinematic compared to anything I've seen on the 550D and even the 5D and GH13.

Maybe it's the faults with the camera plus the nice highlight detail recovered from the sensor/processing, I dunno.

About Highlight Recovering. I've heared this more than once already now. But what exactly is meant with it? And where – Still pictures and/or video?

Regarding colors: The D90 uses the adjustable Picture Control presets. Is just this the reason, or is it something else?

And how is «more cinematic» visible, for someone new to video?

I agree but unfortunately the the computer machine can do a far larger window then 640 :)
Many a time when doing timelapses with my D90 do I run some video, then look back at the LCD playback and say " wow that looks pretty nice " only to get it home for the horrors.

If you watch the Zacuto shootout, the Nikon had exceptional low light sensitivity when compared to all the other cameras.

especially one could see the ugly, completely videoish color-noise of the Canons.
The Nikon had almost filmgrain like, neutral noise.
Even at 50.000 ISO it somehow refused to look too digital.

Ok, that was the D3s though.

color, latitude, low light performance and so on are properties of the still image sensor and of course the d90 is better there since it's simply a better camera.

Then put the Nikon lenses on the Canon, just like I do, and half the rest of the Canon HDSLR owners. I've got Nikon glass from 1972-2003 on my Canon. Works just dandy.

Uh yea, when you've got $6k to play with, it makes a difference. You'll not the D90 didn't make the comparison.

there are plenty of test of latitude out there and the d90 is the best in its price range. low light performance is average, better than the gh1, not as good as the 5d or d3s, i haven't compared the 550 specifically but my educated guess is it's slightly better.

at the same time, low light comparisons are rather idiotic; who TRIES to shoot in practically no light conditions; in a real world environment one uses a LOT of light and filters it down, and you shoot for the lowest ISO/ASA/sensitivity or the sensors native sensitivity and expose properly.

...there, the D90 loses, codec, settings/adaptability, etc, hands down. I am a Nikon gear owner, i have had a D3s, D300s, D300, D90, and D50, and a slew of lenses, pro and consumer, new and old, but ive used them for stills only.

Nikon has a LONG way to go towards video on DSLR's in my experience. Canon has them seriously whipped, and seems to listen to their consumer base.
