where is the canon xf300/305 info?

Cowpunk:

How is the skew performance on the XF300?

Also, does it have flash-band correction?

Thanks. I am very interested in these cameras.

According to Alan Roberts' testing, the skew is neither better or worse than any other cmos chip camcorder. My own experience is that it's really not bad at all, and hasn't been an issue even when shooting handheld at full zoom (but then again, I'm not flinging the camera around either). You can see some hand-held, long-zoom & high speed action shots on this baseball footage and decide for yourself:

There is no flash-band correction, and you will get the typical cmos flash-band artifact. You can see some examples of that in this low-light reception footage on Vimeo:

There is a flicker reduction setting for shooting under fluorescent, mercury or sodium lamps, and the manual advises using this along with a 1/100 shutter if you're getting horizontal bands.

Cow-

Does the Canon have a frame rate switch on the body or do you have to dig into the menu like on the EX?
This is something i have always wanted - the ability to change frame rates very quickly. Grab a little slo mo shot and snap it right back to normal motion. just like a Bolex.

You know what, that would be an awesome feature - I like the way you think. You do have to go through the menu to change the framerate, though.

In thinking about it, this might be best because I would hate to accidentally switch to 720p60 when I want to shoot everything in 1080p24.

Cow-

How are the files to work with inside an Avid? I know Canon was working closely with Avid to create the codec, but I have not heard anything about that since release.

It's odd but I can't seem to find a camera shop that has the Canon XF on display- and I'm in NYC!
(B&H has one in stock but not on the floor and Abel Cine tech doesn't even carry it.)

There does not seem to be a big clamoring for this camera as there was for the EX a few years ago. EVERYONE seems to be catering to the DSLR market right now.
And having just shot to events in the last week with my 5D- I can tell you- it's a major pain in the butt. On location and in the edit bay.

I've yet to be completely blown away by what I've seen posted online so far from XF- and I know that's no way to judge- but at the sane time- I've seen some EXr footage that does look amazing.

Also, what is it like to work with the files in Final Cut Pro. I couldn't find the plugin on the Canon site (although I found the one for Avid). Is it about the same as XDCam?

I'm so used to working in ProResHQ and will have projects that are very quick turn arounds, so I'm little worried about having a codec that slows us down.

Anyone care to share their experience?

Thanks.

Fwiw- I found some RAW files online and imported avid very nicely. Also played down smooth as butter. Best of all- it looked fantastic!
Do not judge this camera by some of the unfair tests against Ex that have been posted online. My guess is that guy did not set up the camera correctly. There is some very fishing footage posted on Vimeo that is very good.

The XF codec works great in FCP with the plugin. Log and transfer directory to ProRes (at much much faster than real time), and you're off! You can set in & out points as well. Yeah, it pretty much works the same as XDcam.

I can't find the XF utility or FCP plugin for download right now. If you want it, PM me your email address and I'll send you a disk image.

Many thanks to cowpunk52 I now have a copy of the "Canon XF Plugin for Final Cut Pro" but unfortunately it will not import the .MXF files except from off the card or at least from a file structure that looks like the card. I know that if I am using the "Canon EOS Movie Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro" but only have the .MOV files for the 5D that I can fake it so that the plugin is fooled that there really is a card by adding matching .THM files but is there some way of recreating the XF card structure? I am not really concerned with what the XF files are like to edit after conversion to ProRes as I am sure that they are just the same as any other ProRes file. I am more interested in the workflow & time taken to convert to ProRes using the FCP Plugin.
