Where is Panasonic in this game?

Couldn't they just do 10 bit with the 4/3 sensor? Going s35 would make their upcoming X-series glass completely worthless.

Not necessarily, they can offer a crop mode just like the etc mode on the gh2. There are plenty of people adapting cine, aps-c, and even full frame manual lenses. I think it'll be foolish for Panasonic to limit their sensors to 4/3 long term.

crop mode looks technically complicated.

best way is get as close to s35, like oversized 4/3". like instead of 2x like 1.7x (since aps-c is 1.6x) slight vignette for 4/3 lenses i guess.

Realistic m4/3 and the size it's not the most important thing to improve on. I see many other things that could be better in a new AF type like camera. I would like to see a sensor similar to the one in the C300 to get the most of each pixel.

All panasonic needs to do is program the magic dvx mojo into a hot key like the good ol' f6, and all will be right with the world. Why is it not there, for the love of god why?

I'm not invested in the game with either camp so here is my perspective. I've seen beautiful filmic images from both Sony and Panasonic. I've seen horrible video like images from both camps as well. Ridiculous low light is impressive, but you can fill with a hand held led, and bring the background lights down to a more normal looking levels. The audience does not care as long as your other production values are there. The audience I saw Crank 2 with did not care it was shot in 1/3" hdv. Most people do not notice that their high hz flat screens make movies look like bbc soaps, even though it makes us all sick. Get over it already and use the tool that is right for you, they are all good enough now, but gear lust is nearly worse than porn.

If you ignore some undefined 4k upgrade path(unusable today and so not real), and don't need burst slow motion, the fs700 upgrades are things that the fs100 should have had in the first place as standard for the price point as defined by the af100. The only real difference is some mystical perceptual difference in imaging quality, that the average audience member will not see. Film stock, Kodak vs. Fuji

For pure bang for the buck image quality I would have had a GH2 a year ago until I went to the store and played with it, and absolutely hated it. I'm a video guy, I don't want 'live view' I want the screen to look the same before I hit record as after. I went over and picked up the sony vg10, and said wow, this feels right, unfortunately as we know, the video quality didn't measure up.

I'm still looking for something that gets it right at a lower end price point, and I'm sure a lot of others are as well. We don't all have clients that we can bill the latest, greatest more expensive model to.

Ironic, no?

don't want to hijack the thread but what causes flat screens to do that? makes great films look cheap and puts me off getting a flat screen

Going against the grain (as usual) and letting it be known that I personally do not want a P2 camera...

Was not fond of having to invest in proprietary media that was generally priced well out of my budget, and they rented for an arm and a leg considering what they were. Looks like they are still priced pretty high.

Hopefully whatever it is will kick out a pretty good signal via 3G-SDI to bypass that altogether.

I agree. The slight sensor size difference makes little difference to me. I REALLY want to see them improve on other things first, like more dynamic range, better highlight handeling, and maybe a few more lines of resolution. Give me those things (and possibly 10bit HD-SDI) and keep the current feature set of the AF100 and the 5K price bracket, and I will be on the list for the first one!

Yeah, the improvements that would make my shooting easier would be:

4:2:2 high bitrate internal recording. I use a Samurai to record today because I want the best out the camera but it's also a more complicated setup.
1:1 focus assist. Then I wouldn't need a DP6 to check focus to shoot without worrying focus might be off.

I would also like things like higher DR, higher ISO, lower noise, 10-bit out, smoother highlights and certainly a 1000 line spec from a 1080p camera.

I'm pretty keen on slo-mo - It's something I can take to a client and say 'look here's something else we can do'

More resolution, 1:1 Focus, higher DR, higher ISO, lower noise, 10-bit out, smoother highlights are all things that I would like but they probably wouldn't make me buy a new camera - clients are happy enough with the pictures I'm giving them now (yes they always want better but it has to be really noticeably better - they're not pixel peeping camera geeks like most of us here)

If they had that, I would buy it in a second. I love the look of the DVX100. None of their followup cameras had the same look and feel as it.

Yes, you've hit the nail on the head with those features for an AF100 replacement. In fact, I think those are the things the camera MUST do - or it's going to be a letdown.

I'd also like to see AVC-Intra (but if it comes at the expense of P2 becoming necessary - I can do without it and use an external recorder).

When do you think that Panasonic will announce this new camera?
At NAB or a bit prior to it? I've read somewhere something about a 5. of April announcement?

Lots of scrambling and late night meetings going on at Panasonic, I'll bet. Still looking forward to the announcement....

I would say with these new announcement indie film maker will not receive much love from Panasonic for couple years. As mentioned before all the gaps sub 10K are grabed by the other manufactures. Panasonic has chosen "Broadcast path" by introducing new updates and cameras.

Black magic design is new indie film maker's love affair.

Panasonic has it right in their hands. Why they don't push beyond their safe zone is probably because of the Japanese culture.

I saw some of those demos - the quality was not better than a hacked GH2. When it is I will take a 2nd look.
