Where do you go on vacation?

Let me give you the low down; I have a big family (5 siblings, in laws, family friends who are practically family etc.) and we like to vacation together. Most of us are based in upstate New York so the Outer Banks in NC became an ideal destination as it allowed many of us to drive in lieu of expensive airfare and car rentals. For the parents, this was a key selling point. Also, the houses in OBX have everything you could ask for: beach front properties, lots of rooms, pool tables, hot tubs, swimming pools and lots of bathrooms, again, another parental request.

Well, after 3 years of going to the Outer Banks in late July, I am personally bored with it. As the ra-ra person in the family, I tend to come up with the big idea and get people on board. I loved OBX but I want something else. I am asking now because now is the time you have to start thinking about travel plans, rental deposits etc.

Please share your vacation plans or ideas or suggestions. As a non-parent, I’m willing to fly anywhere. However, I would imagine the rest wouldn’t drive more than 15 hours or so. Myrtle Beach or Virginia has been on my mind but that can’t be it. There has GOT to be trips to take that are under the radar. I mean, it isn’t as easy to GOOGLE search “Big Family Trip Ideas” and come up with anything. I’m not tied to the ocean either. We all want to be together so one huge house would be great but a string of cabins on an awesome lake would be cool too.

Thanks gang. Please let me know. I’m tapped out of ideas.

I will try to give you a more thoughtful answer later, but I have to run soon. I go to:

1) Central Coast of California
2) Disneyland/Knott's Berry Farm (Southern California)
3) Las Vegas

I dont go on vacations, I travel. But I usually go somewhere where theres alot of big mountains or other good riding/skiing terrain...

Hmmm, I wish I could get my family to travel out West. They are a finiky bunch. Personally, I would LOVE to get them to camp at Yosemite. I've never been there but I'm sure its incredible.

Bahamas, Atlantis hotel great place or a cruise. Cruise is a little easier for me, just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Whenever I am looking for cabins to rent out for vacation here in the northwest I just navigate to the wonders(mountains, national parks, peninsula, bodies of water) that look interesting and google cabins + rental in the areas in or surrounding. Craigslist is also an under-the-radar place to seek rental opportunities and advice on the subject.

We often go with groups of family/friends and find incredible deals that have huge cabins with high ceiling and big kitchens to accomodate us. They usually have outdoor hot tubs, gamerooms, and very close access to hiking and other nature related activities(for the ambitious and less ambitious).

You also don't have to fork over huge amounts of money for touristy stuff.

Thats actually pretty good advice. Considering most of us are in the NorthEast, upstate New York area, I am thinking the Adirondacks or Lake George etc. But, finding THE place is a lot harder than I thought it would be. Hence, this thread. It seems cabin rental places are behind the times a bit and none of them seem to have good websites with good pictures and pertinent information. I am leaning towards cabins this year because we've done the ocean 3 years running.

Jim...as for what time of year...July. Its been the 3rd week in July.

twocik23...your suggestion would TOTALLY have my vote. I just know getting the parents to fork over airfare for their entire families probably aint gonna happen. I really want to go where the water is blue so I can scubadive but I will just do that on my own time. I've been to the Atlantis resort. Stayed there for a week. Absolutely in-friggin' credible place however, it is not for the penny pinchers. You better bring a LOT of moolah. My brother and I went there and our cheapest meal was a $14 dollar hamburger. A .50cent Miami newspaper was $7.00 dollars. And forget drinking...sheesus...

I haven't left the same 100 miles for like 5 years. I'm going a little batty, losing my mind.

Finally getting out of here next week....phew. Going to Ohio to visit some friends. Even if Ohio looks just like NY I don't care, I need a change of scenery, any change...

Dunno if I can be much help. I have been to most of the US National Parks, many of which as a kid/teen. They are very entertaining for children with lost of room to run and play, as well as animals that they have probably never seen.

In the last 5 year the only places I've gone for Vacation were Hawaii, Amillia Island, Ireland, and the UK. Doesn't sound like the fam would be too interested in those, so not sure I can be much help there.

zim-thats a serious consideration. if i cant sway them from the ocean, a return to obx might be possible(ugh!) or a change up to virginia beach or myrtle. hilton head might fit the bill as well. so i will definitely look into this.

any suggestion to spark the conversation Dan is helpful. gives me and others ideas.

PS Ireland is big time on my own personal list.

Kyle-You up there by Buffalo? Theres got to be lots to do up there? Niagra Falls, Canada no?

I've been here all my life, I've done everything once...I want a change of scenery. Niagara Falls is the most incredible thing to someone who hasn't seen it before, when you've seen it 50 times...its "o yea it is cool...very cool" lol.

Yeah, you know whats funny is that living in California now, my mentality has changed. People think nothing of yelling "Road Trip" and heading off to San Francisco or Vegas or San Diego no matter how many hours it takes. Yet, living in upstate New York, I never had the inkling to hop in the car and drive 6 hours to wind up somewhere totally different. It's a shame too. There are many places to go and things to see if you are willing to drive 6 hours no matter where you live.

It is about our 6th or 7th time back to Hilton Head. it is laid back. Clean. Good places to eat.
We always stay at the Holiday Inn Ocean Front. Right on the beach. Pool right on the beach. Nice place to stay. We book ahead and get good rates, then check about two weeks out and if they are not full they drop it even more. Nice outside bar on the beach too if you need that

I hear you Rick, we got lucky both times (everything paid for). I don't know you might find deals everywhere with this economy....

"Hilton Head, SC"

I was just going to recommend that, really nice place !!

You should drive to New England and take a ferry up to Nova Scotia and head to Cape Breton.

I like the sound of this. I'll definitely have to do some checking around.

Hilton Head might be an option. What we loved about OBX so much is that it is THE premiere place to rent big houses on the beach with all the amenities so you can all be together. Our last house had 9 bedrooms, 8 of them had their own bathrooms, swimming pool, hot tub, on the beach, a walk into town, big kitchen, incredible views etc. Its just that after 3 years of it, I want something else. And, the accommodations are never as good as in OBX. It really is a trade off. But one I'm willing to make for a different vacation.
