Where Are The HPX170s?

There is a Jan Crittenden event scheduled with Shane Ross and others in Seattle tomorrow September 23rd that will introduce the 170

A full day event.

I wondering with that scheduled that we might see some HPX170s arriving at dealers for shipping.

anybody got the skinny?

I think that I read that things would be shipping and/or arriving at the end of this month. I am interested also in the 150 and 170. Both seem like really nice additions... now if we could only get some more and cheaper options for P2.

i love my HVX, and i'm going to buy an HPX170 no question (honestly i'd like to get a few)

let's be honest though...

at this point that graph just appears to be an embarrassing prediction on what never came to pass. what happened? did memory just not fall as fast as they anticipated? because i can get gigs worth of RAM for my MBP for less money than a nice steak at a fancy restaurant. SD cards are clearly still expensive when tested to perform at the rigorous levels P2 cards demand. will there be a "day P2 cards broke" at any point? or can we continue to see $1600 for the highest capacity card through several generations of P2 tech?

the more and more time goes by the more and more frustrating it becomes.

If I read it correctly, the P2 card contains 4 SD cards inside? I guess Panasonic is lucky that as the price of SD cards has dramatically fallen over the years, the cost of the P2 enclosure has dramatically increased...

i know that Panasonic needs to maintain the level of quality that their competition doesn't need to match. pick up an SxS card and compare it to a P2 and the difference is GLARING when it comes to quality and perceived durability.

since Panasonic has staked a huge claim in broadcast combined with their philosophy of creating a universal platform/standard for all their gear... it appears that the price of P2 cards is an unfortunate reality their "prosumer" customers must endure.

the positive side is that these cards are built like tanks; they appear to rarely, if ever, fail. but when 3 64 P2 cards could potentially cost more money than an HPX170... that's kinda crazy

/me dreams of owning 3 64 P2 cards... o well :(

The price of p2 cards has dropped 400% in the last 30 months.

An 8Gb card ran $1500.00 when we purchased.

Now a 32 GB card runs $1500.00

For those that want to discuss the cost of p2 cards, please start your own thread on it.

There are literally dozens here.

I just asked for information on 170 ship dates.

thanks

I would love to know WHY P2 is so expensive. Why is there no other company making these things for less?
And that is the question, isn't it? If there was such an enormous profit margin, wouldn't someone else step in?

Sounds like anyone who truly believes they're so grossly overpriced should start their own business making compatible cards.

If there is such a huge perceived profit margin in the cards, wouldn't it make sense that some other company would jump in, reverse engineer its own cards, and undercut Panasonic's price structure to sell a million?

Everybody like cheaper cards.

But for those of us who bought $6K fast/wide SCSI cards to record Y/C analog video, p2 cards or any SSD cards that record DVCProHD are a godsend.

Maybe if they're making a splashy presentation in Seattle tomorrow, the cameras will splash too? I'm going to be annoyed if they don't break out until Oct. I've sold my DVX and I've got work to do.

the folks at specc comm have called me several times with expectations of late this or early next week

dang, had my name on the 1st list batch but chose to ride out the hvx for a bit longer and pay the car off. spec-comm called me today. first batch is en route to them and should have real soon. she said 2nd batch sometime in mid/late october.

Yes, I spoke with them yesterday and they told me the same thing. So at the latest, my pre-ordered HPX should ship by Tuesday of next week ;-)

Fingers crossed.

Dan

I hear you. I remeber that I shelled out 12000 bucks for a Radius VideoVision Telecast, that went into the NuVus slot of my Mac. Fed by a Jackhammer SCSI card back (that delivered 6MB/sec- wow) in 1992,

Jeez.
That would be like spending 17.5K today when you adjust it for inflation.

Could have saved that money and bought yourself a RED One, Postmaster.
:)

In 1992 I was still shooting on Hi8 tapes (if I remember correctly, maybe they were just 8mm), on a camera that probably cost around 7K at the time.
Insane to think what I can shoot now for the same amount of money.

No 170s are available as yet?

At little disappointing.

I thought that the 24th would be the delivery date.

Oh well.
