GH3 When will we see a 4K GH camera?

Hey folks.

Just curious how long you think it will take for a Panasonic Lumix GH-type Micro 4/3 camera to be able to shoot 24p at 4K/UHD resolution. I doubt we'll see raw recording for a while, but compressed 4K footage like the Canon 1DC, perhaps in H.265?. One year? Two? Three?

Just interested in seeing your thoughts. :cheesy:

Personally I don't expect to see much new from Panasonic until this new sensor technology is ready to roll out to the market. It sounds like Panasonic could start making cameras that have significantly more dynamic range than an $85K Alexa with this new tech.

One's thing for sure, good glass will matter with these cameras...... I say invest money in some great lenses now , camera bodies will only become better and make the old ones obsolete.

+ 10 for that. And, in danger of repeating myself: Cameras will become throw away sensors attached to good lenses ...... The top notch camera of today will be our crash-cam the day after tomorrow .... :-)

i wouldnt get too hung up on 4k. if you NEED 4k, you budget can probably afford whatever 4k camera is available at the time.

Well technically it is already a 4k camera. It has a 4k sensor. It just can't record that 4k image to a 4k format. All it would really need is a more advanced processor and some type of 4k recording format. Heck even the GH1 was technically a 4k sensor. Could only record 1080 however. So technically there is little reason why there couldn't be a 4k version of the camera. Most 4k cameras out today only have a 4k sensor and not an 8k sensor down sampled to 4k. So technically the GH3 can resolve the same kind of detail as a 4k camera. If only it could record that 4k image.

Honestly I think it may be the processor speed that slows this down for awhile and not so much a recording format.

Well, this is the 4K recording mode of the just announced JVC 4K camera:

4K2K setting: 3840 × 2160/60P/50p/24p
VBR, 144 Mbps (Max) MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, Audio: AAC 2ch 384kbps 48kHz 16-bit

I also think the GH 4K will be next.

I can't see a GH 4k camera any time soon, but an AF based camera, definitely. Maybe the AF200 will have 4k60p!

No GH4, 4 is bad luck, GH5.... would be nice to have a nicely compressed uhd out of the gh's. Most fun cameras I've used.

I think it will be out just before the 8K, so may as well wait for that.

But then we have to wait for 16 K again .... or 20 DR raw 4:4:4 (with focus peaking & espresso device) ... or holographic 32 K .... ???? I guess if Kubrick would have waited for next years Kodak material or Arri camera he probably would have made zero films while waiting.... ;-)

The problem of the $K resolutions is the liquid nitrogen cooling system required. User tests have shown that most consumers would rather not have to have a little bottle cart with them, sort of like what people with emphysema have, as they take their family photos...

The next big thing I'm looking for at this level is wider dynamic range, and better color sampling at the current 2K (1960x1080 is sufficiently close to 2K...) spatial resolution.

I'd love to see a sea change in the industry away from 16:9 towards the much better 2.4:1.

1K would be 2400 x 1000
2K would be 4800 x 2000
4K would be 9600 x 4000

Forget those top and bottom black bars, let's get back to changing the width of the image, not the height. Just like the curtains used to open up in theaters for '70mm' movies.
