When to use 30f?

I've got a shoot coming up that involves a bit of sports action, was planning to shoot hdv 60i for ease of delivery to local cabler, but then thought I should consider 30f, as I may want to do some slomos on the sports stuff in post. Never actually shoot 30f, was wondering what the pros and cons are. Most likely it's going to need to be bumped up to some other format for delivery anyway, so that's not an issue. What else should I be considering?

I actually use 30F for web delivery of sports stuff. Saves me the headache of needing to deinterlace after the fact. And for sports I don't find 24P or F is ideal at all. Isn't it essentially the same as 60i but progressive Huy? I realize that 60i is the way to go for slomo though, although I can't remember exactly why.

Assumingly it is easier to decrease the speed with more frames and keep a smooth non choppy look

30F looks a lot different than 60i actually, it's smoother than 24p but not as smooth as 60i. I suppose if you don't want 24p then progressive is the way to do it, although 60i is much more versatile because it holds a lot more motion information than either 24F or 30F. You can easily split the fields up and get 60p or you can do time remapping and get variable speed. Much more difficult to do this with progressive frames. For sports I believe people usually shoot 60p for best result.

When you say "split the fields" with 60i what do you mean as this sounds useful? Thanks

I use 30f all the time when I'm doing multicam shots with my DVX100b's in 30p and DVC30's "movie mode". Works great. As long as you've got the light it looks perfectly fine. Then again I am a "nobody"....
For slomo though it's 60i all the way.
