when push came to shove I chose the 7D for a commercial shoot

I was called on last minute this week to direct a commercial spot for the web. I was considering the red one and I also considered using the hvx200 with letus extreme vs my new 7D. Ultimately, it just made sense--- the 7D it was.

Despite what barry says about line charts and pixels, the 7D looked gorgeous and I dont regret the decision one bit.

We rented the cinema bundle from redrock with follow focus and matte box, and a couple good prime lenses and a bunch of 4x5 filters. I saved so much money on lenses, not needing a DIT, etc that i was able to put that money into crew and gear. We put the 7D on a jib with some fancy lights and the client was impressed. With all the bells and whistles it looked more like we were shooting with the RED.

What was once a theoretical on this board became a reality. My crew and I actually felt that the whole situation was surreal and looking at our rushes we couldn't believe what we were capturing with this little SLR.

Were there hickups?
A few. Mainly jib related though. I think i should have added weight onto the 7D to make it more jib friendly. Other than that it looked beautiful and the low light performance was incredible. Colors look great. sharpness looks great on the apple 23 inch monitors in our edit bay.

I will post the commercial as soon as we cut it (will be done in 2 weeks)

Glad to hear it worked well in the real world!

There's no shame in choosing the right camera for the job. I don't believe Barry is saying trying to say anything with the charts...the results are simply show the facts of the camera in that environment. Luckily, filmmakers have been lying with cameras for years, so we just need learn how to tell the best lies with the 7D :)

here's a shot of the rig and a quick screengrab from the shoot
