When is the HVX200A coming out?

Jan has said that the rebate is to celebrate the one year anniversary of the release of the HVX.

I have also read that Panasonic is working on two other cams right now so there are no plans for an updated HVX anytime in '07. Though, I don't know the source of this piece of information, so it should be taken as speculation.

I'm ready! i see pannys got that rebate crap going on so the A has to be right around the corner.

Rebate "crap???"

What is that?

And why does an attempt by Panasonic to shut down the grey market by offering a 8 Gb card mean a cam revision is coming?

unless you are joking I would vote that statement to be one of the top ten dumbest of 2006 . . . but don't worry, there's still plenty of time for others to enter the competition.

HAHA I would love to see them release the HVX200a right after this rebate. It would be delicious Karma for those who got the free 8gig card I just missed.

The HVX200a b and c will undoubtedly be a free download firmware update you can use the SD card to transfer to the camera. So buy now and get a free 8 gig card and $90 book, and start enjoying instead of coveting the camera.

Panasonic will release the HVX200A the day AFTER I buy a non-A, HVX200. And with the recent price reduction, PLUS the free 8GB card, I just might buy one!

Actually you should all hold off from buying a camera because there is a better one just around the corner. In fact very soon Panasonic will release the HVX-200a which will have SDI out with embedded audio, 4 xlr inputs as well as a selectable on board mic, plus all the things you hate about the HVX will be fixed. But wait a minute, dont buy that one when it comes out, because there will be the HVX-200b just around the corner from that and it will have done away with the tape mechanism and in it's place is a removable 1TB hard drive that you can record to and then swap out while you continue to record to one of the 256gb P2 cards that will also be available. This camera will also have a 2/3" chip and you'll be able to remove the ENG zoom lens and use digi prime lenses.

The source is Jan C.-L. (thanks again to Jan for taking the time to answer this question in very difficult times for her). I asked her in a personal e-mail. Not earlier than 2008 we can expect an update (right know they are developing 2 bigger cams). So just buy the HVX en enjoy it, make a lot of money so you will be able to get the update probably at the end of 2008.

This discussion reminds me of the SNL skit involving Steve Jobs and a new iPod every ten seconds.

The latest was the "inviso" iPod which was so small no body could see it and held every song ever written.

Is that available for viewing somewhere?

After a long time meditating on the situation, I don't think Panasonic would release anymore A, B, C, ect. type cameras.

If anything, the DVX100 was an experiment that paid off big-time. It set the standard. The HVX200 itself, when you think about it, has also set the standard for sub-$10,000 cameras by offering uncompromised HD image quality (ie. not HDV), finally better color (4:2:2) for general purpose and particularly to help indies with greenscreen work, as well as remarkable new features such as variable frame rates, and all the while remaining very similar in form and function to the DVX100-series. Everything else is "just okay" by comparison.

This is not to say that HDV can't do some incredible stuff, it most certainly can :)! But, the bigger picture reveals that the only thing new over mini-DV with HDV cameras seems to be the HD-quality boost and possibly a 24p feature, if that.

So, why would Panasonic work on refining a current model when they could one up themselves and give us an even better camera? Sure, you could say "'money', har, har, har!", but if Panasonic jumped ahead of the competition then why would anyone want anything that is less than what Panasonic is offering? Also, if people keep expecting an "A" model then that would hurt sales in the long run when Panasonic releases a new model and everyone steps back and leaves it up to the few early adopters to try the camera out. Already there's a lot of complaints about the HVX200 for many things, nothing worth releasing an "A" model in my opinion, but if you'll notice the biggest complaints concern the adoption of the P2 workflow which, more often than not, is an NLE-related issue. As has been said about the rebate, the HVX200 is only a year old and it is based around the work that perfected the DVX100-series, the only possible difference in an "A" model would be:

a) Lighter camera
b) More P2 slots
c) No tape transport
d) HDMI in/out
e) Better LCD and Viewfinder resolution
f) A few more frame rates
g) AVC-Intra recording option

Now is that really worth spending another $5,500-$6,000 on? For some maybe, but for most, I think not. With these massive changes, I'd expect an entirely new model because the HVX200 is supposed to bridge the gap for the transfer from SD to HD workflows. The sort of camera options listed would be for a full on HD workhorse camera with a P2-based SD workflow as an option.

That's why I don't think there will be an "A" model, but that's just me. :)

i'm certain that panny will come out with the upgrade to the hvx..of course. Every camera manufacturere always comes back with an upgrade or two.
from the canon GL, XL, optura
panasonic, DVX
sony, vxseries and the pd series...

the new model will have better "EVERYTHING"
