When illiterates control the media ...

OK. So I walk in on a friend who was looking at all the mindless celebrity clips on TMZ.com. Of course, I never watch that stuff, but my friend, well ... anyway.

But I digress.

I look over his (or her) shoulder and they make you watch a "Sponsor Message" (in the old days, we used to call those "advertisements") before they let you watch the celeb clips ...

... so anyway, it's a very slick streaming ad for a (new?) "Motorola Q Smartphone" from Verizon. Here's the product:

Initially looks pretty cool, huh? But look closely at what they're touting about the new and improved "smartphone":

Gosh, kiddies. It's half as thin!!!

Doesn't that just mean it's twice as thick?

Awesome! I was getting so pissed off continually dropping my thin phone all the time and was truly all nostalgic for my old "brick" cell phone of 15 years ago. Thanks to Motorola for leading the "thick" revolution in communications technology.

Glad to see that these illiterate advertising geniuses are earning their big bucks.

Nice move, Moto.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back and see what Lindsay Lohan is up to ...

Actually, in the old, old days (You know, before the 80's), commercials were introduced as " A word from our Sponser", meaning someone gave them money to help produce the show, in exchange for a chance to promote their products. This goes way back to the Radio days and soap operas.

Absolutely Capt - I work on a couple of online shows now, and there has even been mentions of working products into the shows, changing names, etc...

Just like the ol' days.
"Welcome to the Texaco Star Theater"

Of course, in the ol' days no one would have used the phrase 'Half as thin'

Actually, I was feeling rather guilty that I am about "half as thin" as I was when I was in high school.

But having entered "Moto-world", I am delighted, because apparently "half as thin" is now really, really good.

Now where did those breakfast fries with gravy go ... ?

In the "old days", the general public was educated, and the media didn't have to talk down to them. Have you ever seen the movie Idiocracy? Very prophetic.

Thats really funny. We're so used to bad Engrish, most people wouldnt even catch it. Ever go to the express checkout line at a grocery store and read "15 items or less" ? ...less items?
I once saw a sign where someone crossed out "less" with a magic marker and wrote "fewer". I wanted to shake that persons hand.

When we shop at WalMart, I usually go through the Tobacco lane, and ignore the "20 items or less" sign, as I load a cart full of groceries onto the belt. I don't do it to be a jerk, but I'll be damned if I'm going to wait a half an hour in one line (When there are like 20 other registers that are closed), then spend another half an hour to buy cigarettes that you can only buy in THAT lane. I do it and dare management to say anything. I could stop at another store on the way home, but that really kind of negates the benefits of going to a "one stop store".

If I had one thing to say to today's youths it would be, "Shut yer holes."

If I had two things to say to today's youths, the second one would be, "The better you write, the smarter you sound."

Seriously, I once edited a letter from the head of new business in which he used the phrase, "We want to take your company to the next hemisphere."

Good catch.

Yahoo news is the worse. Their Reuters articles are full of bad spellings and even badder grammar. :)

With entire generations growing up on spell check, ...things are only going to get worse.
