When good HDMI ports go bad

How does everyone else's video quality (especially as it relates to noise and resolution) throughout the HDMI jack/or the component jack compare to the quality played back after whatever editing/transcodeing you are doing.

I have had the camera for about a week and had it hooked up to two largish monitors (one was a nice 1080P set at home and the other a 720p set at work)
and was really starting to get concerned because the video was really grainy in both camera mode (playing the video out live) and playback mode (pre recorded) both through the HDMI and the component cables.

So on a whim i transcoded the video to my macbook pro and played it back out to the TV through the RGB port and lo and behold the picture improved remarkably, like an amazing amount.

I am certain that i am not sending SD to the TV through my HDMI port and i have checked all applicable settings on my TV. I'm not saying there is no way i missed something silly but i feel like its unlikely.

Anyone else had any experience with this?

I did notice a few people talking about excessive grain (which is odd for a camera noted for its clean image) and I'm wondering if the component/HDMI isn't somehow capable of sending out the uncompressed images.

Seams like this would be important to know if you are capturing via HDMI or critical monitoring.

Any thoughts or experiences?

thanks in advance
John

Turn the sharpening down or off on your HDTV. This may help as they come set up with the sharpening cranked usually and this will enhance the noise grain if there is any. The camera produces a clean image but it has to be well exposed and correctly exposed or you will definitely get noise in the image..
Once video is recorded to the SD card its already compressed. The only way to bypass the compression thru HDMI is to capture the signal directly with a capture card and your computer AFAIK.

perhaps i'm not making myself clear

my HDMI output in camera mode (supposedly uncompressed) feeding a TV looks much worse than trascodeing with my macbook and playing out through the RGB input.

exposure and lighting are all well within range of acceptable.

the footage itself looks fine on a computer (even blown up very large) but out of the HDMI it looks like an atari 2600

as if the HDMI where outputting SD but there is no setting for locking down the HDMI into any particular mode it just has Auto/fix/480p

obviously i have tried all three modes and 480p looks way worse than the other modes leading me to believe that it is not me looking at SD and thinking it is too pixilated

anyway
I'm open to try anything

as Matt said turn down the sharpness of the hdtv /monitor when viewing through HDMI.
I had the same issue when I fist connected my cam to an hdtv.
It looked like ants crawling all over the image.
I had set the sharpness to zero for my hdtv. Image looked ten times cleaner after that .
This should be a sticky
" getting rid digital HDMI Noise"
