What's wrong with this HMC150

I would not base judgement of the camera on that site but search the forum footage and see how great the image is from the 150 series.

I agree with Matt S here.

Any camera will only be as good as the person behind it.

I've seen great HD video coming out of the 150.

The HMC is lower in resolution than the other prosumer 1/3 cameras. These are great tests to show that.

However, Keeping your final viewing medium in mind, if you show these videos on a HDTV, will that display be capable of showing the superior resolution from the other cameras? Or will the HDTV nullify the higher resolution sensors from the other cameras?

David: First of all, it's obvious from the screen shots that the HMC resolves MUCH lower resolution than the other cameras.

Secondly, it's a well known and discussed fact that the native resolution of the sensor(number of pixels) in the HMC is lower than its competitors, which explains its superior low light performance.

The key things to ask are: Does the lower resolution show up on the TV? Do you value higher resolution or better low light? I value better low light so I went with the HMC..

So, in reading your response, you can point to anything that supports what you said?

I'm not trying to be difficult, but you have identified support for your position, or support fot the high resolution of whatever other cameras you are comparing it to.

As to the screen shot -- that means nothing to me at least.

David: Why doesn't the screenshot mean anything to you? The HMC clearly resolves less detail than the other cameras. With the EX1 clearly being the leader in that group when it comes to resolution.. Unless you simply do not see the difference.

Just do a search of HMC sensor resolution or something in line of that on this forum, and you'll find many discussions.

It's no coincidence that the HMC has superior low light performance than its higher resolution competition.

The EX-1 is not a 1/3 camera so it better have higher resolution.

Next to other 1/3 cameras the 150 does very well in terms of resolution.
It's not like the 150 is a SD camera.

You're kidding me right? The HMC's screen shot looks horrible compared to the other HD cams.. And yes, we're not comparing HMC to an SD camera, we're comparing it to other HD cameras in the same category.

A full resolution still frame comparison on the web is more telling than any other form of web video because it shows all the details of the image produced by the camera sans motion artifacts obviously...

Maybe it's just because I have a trained eye to look for these things because I do a lot of still photography work as well.. Yes, that must be it.

Ive never seen a 150 in action so cant give you any information at all.

But, to your second point, that could also be your hindrance, and David S's point is very valid. We arent talking about still cameras here. These are motion cameras. And what happens frame to frame is very important. And as they are motion cameras they often need to move or watch movement whilst capturing motion so what happens here is also very important.

A still frame grab on a static object will tell you this - how the camera performs without any motion in the image. Is that valid? To many it seems to be, but not to me.

Important to note the price difference in cameras on that list as well.

And there is the other point you alluded to in your first post - at best much of what these cameras actually shoot arent going to go beyond viewing on an HDTV - so how do they perform there? In my experience when watching on an HDTV, the biggest gains to image appearance from footage shot on an HD camera are in dynamic range. (that is unless of course your shooting with something like the HPX3000, that can give you great dynamic range and killer resolution in motion - way above the class of cameras being viewed here).

I worked for a professional photography studio for many years so I'm sure my eyes are professionally trained but to say you can tell all you need to know about the resolution of a group of 1/3 video cameras based on web images and then to claim the EX-1 is the best of those when the EX-1 is not even a 1/3 camera tells me all I need to know.

And no, I'm not kidding.:)

Wow booggerg... just wow.

You're basing your entire opinion on the hmc due to one screenshot from some random guy who took it?
-He may have not used the best settings for the hmc.
-He may have rendered it poorly when exporting the screenshot
-Also it's a screenshot, and like Noel said.. a motion camera isn't meant for one screenshot.
-It could have been the worst screenshot out of all the frames taken.

Made yourself look awfully silly.

I've done a lot of research on the HMC before purchasing it. Every screen shot I've seen in the paste against the XHA1 shows the HMC in lower resolution. Obviously I did not develop my opinion on the HMC simply from this test. True, frame to frame rendering is not represented in screen shot comparisons but then not everything I shoot shows motion, a lot of locked down stationary/establishing shots are done.

No $hit the EX1 is not a 1/3 cam, no $hit the EX1's screenshot shows the highest resolution of of all the cameras in that test, no $hit we all know EX1's 2/3 sensor is capable of higher resolution than 1/3 sensors, and no $hit the other 1/3 cams shows screen shots with noticeably higher resolution than the HMC's screen shot.

I'm not bashing the HMC as camera overall but just pointing out a fact that is presented in a obivous manner from that test. Here's an old thread wher a lot of people commented on the low resolution of the HMC grabs http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=150828&highlight=resolution

Now, the real question is: We've all seen tests of the HMC against other 1/3 cams that displayed the HMC's lower native resolution, you all claim these tests could have been poor conducted, can you link us to any properly conducted tests that have a different conclusion?

Your observations do not jibe with my experience.

Our HMC150 produces remarkable video. Screen shots on the web have limited usefulness to me, and as I can see in this thread, many others as well.

Research is one thing; actually using one and evaluating what it produces is another.

David: No doubt HMC150 produces remarkable video. I'm not disputing that point. I'm saying HMC has lower native resolution than competition 1/3 HD cams. Is this not what you've experienced?

I just got my HMC last week but I have no other HD cams to compare it to..

My point is that evaluating frame grabs or comparing native resolution means nothing if the camera produces video that clients like and you make money from that video.

I've had four 1/3 inch HD cams. To be honest, we like the HMC150 the most, and so have our clients.

So, no that isn't my experience.

Agreed, and my comments never said the HMC couldn't produce excellent work.

My comment on was on a technical level regarding the resolving power of the HMC's sensor compared to other 1/3 sensors. Absolute resolution isn't what I'm seeking either but resolution differences is worth mentioning. I'm making an preceise comment on one particular characteristic of the HMC, you guys are responding with general comments of the HMC's abilities, all of which are true but none of are valid in the context of what I was and what the OP was asking.
