7D What's wrong with my 7D?

Last weekend I used my 7D to shoot some video and take some timelapse photos. Today, when I took it out to use it again, something's happened. It's not turning on.

I tried recharging the battery, and the battery is fine, but it's like there's a glitch somewhere in the camera so that it doesn't get any power from the battery.

I managed to turn it on two or three times, but it always shuts down again after a few seconds, that's why I think there's a glitch somewhere.

Anyone else ever had this problem? Would love to know if there's an easy fix since we're shooting a feature pilot next weekend.

How do you know the battery is fine? Have you tried it with a different one? Are you using a battery grip or any other modifiers? Have you changed the firmware recently?

I've tried two batteries. Original Canon LP-E6, both of them. Both of them charge fine according to the indicator light, and I'm using the original Canon charger that came with the camera. They've never given me any problems in the past either.

I don't think it's the batteries.

Did it show the sensor cleaning screen when you boot up then it goes blank? Does it show the sensor cleaning screen when it shuts down?

After you turn it on try hitting the liveview and or DISP. button just in case it's not actually turning off and the screen is just blanked out.

What device did you use to do timelapse?

Hold the Menu button down as you turn it on. That should get you to the menu on bootup. If you get there you can go to the third yellow wrench tab and hit "Clear settings". This will restore your camera to the default settings.

Anothter thing to try is to change lenses and/or remove your lens and put it back on. Sometimes if the lens is not connected all the way it can blank out the boot up.

Cheers,
Pete

I'm pretty sure it's a power glitch of some kind.

It doesn't turn on at all, that's the problem. Even though I've tried two fully charged batteries.

Well, ok sometimes it turns on, but as soon as I push a button or wiggle the camera a bit it just goes black and won't turn back on.

I used a cheap non-canon brand timelapse remote, but I've used it several times before without any issues.

When I took it out of the bag and first noticed this problem yesterday, it was turned on for some reason. Maybe it had switched on accidentally somehow in the bag or something, or maybe I forgot to turn it off. I figured it would have just drained the battery but maybe it got overheated? Or maybe the backup clock battery got drained?

Anyone know what would happen if the clock battery was out of power? Would the camera refuse to turn on for something like that?

Sorry if i missed this: did you try powering it with the a/c adapter? This will at least help you isolate the problem - whether it is a battery problem or something more.

Try the card. I had a problem with the card once. Camera wouldn't turn on. Change the card. Perfect.

The little plastic piece that keeps the battery locked. Check that it is not defective.
You mean the little plastic piece on the lid that touches the micro switch? Yeah it's fine, the one on the CF card slot too.
But I suspect it might be something to do with the camera not being able to get power from the battery somehow.

Unfortunately I don't have an a/c adapter. I should have one, but I don't. Not sure I know anyone who do in town either.

Tried it, but no change unfortunately. Also tried without a card.

Tried it without a battery too, but that didn't work either. Not sure why. =)
