What's up with Blu-ray?

M-Disc (also mfr under lic by Ritek and Verbatim) with claims 1,000 year life and comes in up to 100GB BDXL formats.

FWIW, they have some videos on the relative "life" of other medias including some advanced aging test

That's exactly what I'm using for family archive storage. Some of the wider family archive footage is film-based from the 1930s onward so that's why I chose to archive to Verbatim M discs. It's irreplaceable. That footage along with all the wider family's later old 8mm/Super 8 and some 16mm right through to the family's VHS and DV days is now going from HDD to these M discs. Nothing really scientific but what made me move to M disks from regular Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim LTH discs for archiving was this rather odd review. Quite interesting though.

The value to me of a disc is the packaging and a menu. I am an amateur shooting for amateurs and the discs are an archive of an event. The packaging and menus are of real value to them. A thumb drive doesn't cut it. Easy to keep a copy of the DVD or Bluray files on a hard drive too. But sorting through a bunch of identical looking thumb drives to show on the TV to your family doesn't compare to putting in a disc and letting them see the box etc. Selecting the menu that shows what you want rather than fast forwarding through a file like a VHS tape !

Thanks for the info about M-Disc guys. Very useful. I looked at this a while ago and then didn't do anything about it. I already have a (good) Pioneer Blu-Ray Burner (BDR-XD05TB). Seems to play almost anything, even some DVDs that other players find glitchy, but it won't write or read M-Disc. So I've just bought another one that does...especially after reading that most modern Blu-Ray players should (and I emphasis should, rather than definitely will) also be able to read M-Discs once I've created them. We'll see, but if nothing else that's yet another Blu-Ray/DVD/CD reader/writer in the house. Nothing like having multiple/redundancy of systems with hardware that one day will be hard to find! I have many hundreds of discs!!!

This is what I've just bought - the Pioneer BDR-XD07TS:
