whats this "adblocked" situation???

i mentioned a p2 logging product from imagine products in a thread elsewhere on the forum and though i typed in the product name, it displayed as "adblocked" in my posted thread...

anyone know what's up?

I imagine that "imagine products" directly competes with an official advertiser of this site so a mod modified your and other postings including one from Kholi (from the looks of the thread it is about the same thing I believe).

So this isn't an open board? We can only refer to paid advertisers?!?!

Besides being unethical, that strikes me as impractical and seriously limits the usefulness of putting any time in on helpful posts.

I use their software all the time. Great folks and very responsive. If company chooses not to advertise somewhere it's hard to believe we're not free to recommend them. There's nothing remotely similar to their products from the advertisers on this site, so it's not a competitor thing. Has to be simply greed on the part of the board owners...

This turns my stomach...eck.

The referenced product isn't the only one that is blocked.

I know of at least two more.

This isn't our site guys.

It belongs to Jarred Land and he sets the rules.

I think you need to be here a little longer than two months before you start jumping to such rash conclusions about how this place works.

There's an issue with HD Log, one I'm not involved in, one Jarred's dealing with on his own.

And there are certain companies which ARE adblocked, because of issues like their reps directly skirting the board's advertising policies.

But to say that in conversions here, only paid advertisers can be referred to, is just plain outrageous.

You can freely discuss just about anything here, whether it's from an advertiser or not (I mean, come on...) For example, you may have noticed that occasionally we discuss HVXs and DVXs here, and for the last four years Panasonic never advertised here! They do have a little banner running for the HPX500 now, but still... and Canon doesn't spend a penny here and we have very active forums talking about their products.

You can say anything you want, good or bad, about any product here whether it's a sponsor or not -- you just better be able to back up anything that you say; if what we see looks like slander or character assassination against any company or individual, we'll nuke it.

Sometimes companies do something that gets them put on a certain "list"; Jarred is the keeper of that list, and he enforces who goes on that list and when they come off that list.

Um, Barry, I don't know how you can say that if there's and "adblocked"msg coming up. Just the name of a product or company is not an advert. It's not even a link.

You can still discuss the product, it doesn't compete with any advertiser and even if it did, too bad. But as for the "adblocked" situation, that's something that needs to be resolved between Imagine and DVXUser. Until that gets resolved, the situation will continue. I said that in the message above, and that situation is still continuing apparently.

wow! i didnt mean for this topic to get so heated. heck, i was just curious and i guess i got my answer - kind of...

when i first started dealing with imagine products, i had a HUGE problem with them because their literature was a good deal misleading as to what the product could and could not do. i contacted them and told them as much and though they didnt remedy the situation they did quickly clear up my question.

i think though that my complaint with them has more to do with their not having a good design sense or a grasp of efficient documentation process (have you seen their really poorly designed website?) than any intentional shenanigans.

i am though HUGELY curious as to what they did that was so heinous that got even the mention of their product blocked???

While it's true I've only been on here a short time, it seems to me the tone of this forum is fairly unfriendly.

I've never seen an 'adblocked' thingy on any other site. Nor someone telling me I haven't been around long enough to "understand" how the forum works. Or someone else saying the site's direction and scruples are left to one individual. Or someone defending the 'founder' who apparently can't be bothered to respond himself.

WGZN's comment is well taken. Imagine Products is clearly a small outfit. So is DVXUser. The 'heinous' thing was probably nothing more than a whim or bad day on one or both parties part that got blown out of porportion.

Anyway, here's my thing: Due to a recent family event, it made me realize that life is indeed very very short. Too short to spend voluntarily in unhappy situations.

So, whoever's in charge here, could you please show me the exit door? I can't find how to 'unsubscribe' from the site (which I could have sworn was a Federal law?) . I do not wish to receive DVXUser sponsored spam either. I'd just prefer to go to a friendlier place.

Thanks guys. And really-- lighten up ya'll. You'll live longer.

The site definitely has its own personality, and if you don't think you'll mesh well here, best of luck in wherever you do go. I've asked Jarred to address your requests.

Jason:

The fact is that this site was started and is owned and controlled by Mr. Land.

He is the boss.

There are things that I and others find unfortunate about the way things are run here, but that isn't my call.

It's like TV programs that some people don't like - change the channel.

Sorry about your family event.

However, for the most part I find the contributors here to be respectful, helpful, intelligent, and understanding.

Patience isn't a strong suit for some.

I'd be interested why you feel reading posts here is an "unhappy situation."

This just a HVX200 forum. Why let it control any part of your happiness or life?

best of luck though.

Look. it's only partly my place to say, but it boils down to this.

The company mentioned in this discussion was given the opportunity to conform to advertising policies of this site (which I might ad are quite user-friendly, as well as lenient), and they elected not to be a part.

The decision to no longer be a part of this site was that of the company in mention, and no one else... As a matter of fact the representative of this company is still an active member and is free to post and contribute on this site, but until the company elects to conform to our advertising policy (and that does not mean they have to pay a dime to this site, b/c they don't) then the situation (as Barry said) will remain as it is.

Nothing more needs to be said... It's business. "Hey, can you please stop doing such and such... or if you would like that privilege we have options available for you". Your decision. They elected neither of the above.

Please contact me if you have any further questions regarding this. But, what was just said is really all there is to it... No juicy gossip here... sorry :)

Thanks,
Jason

Let's be clear about the "advertising policy" too -- it's not that they have to become a sponsor, because they don't. They can freely come on and answer questions and offer all the technical support and assistance that they want to. What someone can't do is use this site to advertise their product for free. That's all.

If you want to advertise, sign up as a sponsor. If you don't want to sign up as a sponsor, don't advertise. All members are welcome, tech assistance is welcome, but to be fair to Jarred (who pays the bandwidth) and to our sponsors (who defray that cost, in exchange for the privilege of advertising), it's not fair for any company to exploit DVXUser to advertise their own product for free. And I'm not saying that is what any particular company has done, I'm not singling anyone out, I'm making a general statement as to what our advertising policy is. NOBODY is required to become an advertiser, nobody is required to spend a dime. They're just asked to refrain from advertising their product here. If they want the privilege of advertising their product (as a signature, or with a banner, or to post press releases or whatever) then they should become a site sponsor.

I think another important point is that if a company does advertise here, they have been vetted by Jared and the gang. If anyone could advertise that would no longer be the case. We have all heard some of the horror stories and this place allows members to be comfortable in patronizing the sponsors.

I have bought also from nonsponsors and I have seen those nonsponsers on the boards clarifying issue at times with no problems. At times they have been thanked for stopping by.

I honestly don't get how people see the world sometimes when issues like this arise.

We make no claim that non-sponsors aren't good companies, let's be very clear on that. If someone chooses to not be a sponsor, that's a perfectly legit choice and is no reflection on whether that company's good or not!

But bosindy's right, we're not going to allow a Crooklyn scam shop to advertise here either. If we can identify that someone's shady, we won't accept them as a sponsor. We can't control or have liability for how a sponsor treats a customer of course, but we do try to establish that the companies we accept as sponsors are respected/respectable good vendors.
