I did a music video recently and the day after shooting all my shots I edited a short 10 sec clip of each of my favorite takes up to youtube to check the quality of them and they looked amazing at 360p. Flash forward to me uploading the complete edited music video now and the same shots look horrible in comparison at 360. All my encoding was done the same way 20mps, sony avc, 1920X1080 h.264 at best quality. What is the deal?

Yeah, am I crazy or has the quality of youtube taken a dip recently? Because I think they have generally improved in recent years.

I uploaded the same sixty second clip to youtube and vimeo. The vimeo quality is so much better.

If you look at it as soon as the upload finishes, this is normal. All that's happened is that the file has been uploaded. YouTube then sends it off for processing on their various rendering and conversion / compression facilities. This can take many hours.

When I do the YouTube dance, I upload and then leave it overnight before I look at it again to evaluate if it's OK to take it public. And it's always acceptable the next day. Of course, YMMV.

You might be mangling the footage when you export it out of your NLE. Seek professional help, as you'll need to de-noise, dither, and possibly do a high quality scale or color space conversion to get your footage looking the best it can. These are all pre-processing functions that are not built into NLEs.
