Whats that strobing?

Any clue on why the colors strobe green to red on this clip, and the focus goes in and out? Shot with auto focus and auto iris. I am guessing this is why, and that the dark conditions accentuate the fluctuations.

Please excuse the poor pixelation. I have learned since that when uploading your original files (mts) to AVCCAM viewer (m2ts) your video images go to crap when you go to convert to a compressed file. I now upload the files directly as mts, bypassing the AVCCAM viewer upload software, and then I convert to viewable MPEG4 using a software converter called Emicsoft.

When is this happening? What are your camera settings... frame rate, shutter, iris, gain?

Auto focus is a bear and there are plenty of threads on here about it with tips and tricks to get the best out of it. You should try not to rely on it as much as possible.

Also when you are compressing HD video footage there are MANY different codecs and settings within them to get a great picture out of a relatively small file... like MPEG4 H.264 at around 2500-5000kbs (great for online uploading).

Side note: Have you considered a stabilizer for your HMC? At least have your OIS on right?

Settings were 30 fps, iris auto, gain on lowest setting. I did an experiment recently with OIS--on and off--and I couldn't tell any noticeable difference with it on. Is there a separate stabilzer you can get for the HMC? Are you talking about one of those huge contraptions that you attach the camera to? You are right about MPEG 4 it is by far the best compression I have found so far. It blows WMV out of the water.

I dont actually see strobing from green to red... can you mention the times in the video its doing it?

As far as compact and affordable stabilizers - There are shoulder mounts, hand held stabilizers like the HaloRig and others that will help you out a lot when shooting this type of moving footage. OIS should definitely be ON, its a noticeable difference for sure.

Im thinking the quality isn't high enough to notice it... Have a HD version?

No. Thanks. I just learned that in order to get an HD version I need to convert directly from the original mts file. I use to upload directly to my computer via AVCCAM viewer which turned the file into m2ts. When I converted from that it came out with the crappy quality that you see in the video.

AVCCAMViewr does not convert. It just changes the file extension.

What are you using for an NLE? You should be able to export an HD copy for youtube no problem. I am confused to why you think you can not make an HD youtube video.

When I convert the m2ts ("file extension"/AVCCAMviewer) from my computer hard drive to MPEG4 using Emicsoft conversion software the quality is bad. When I do the EXACT same conversion from the mts file on my computer hard drive (notvia AVCCAMviewer) the quality is high.

Was your white balance on auto, too? Sometimes under fluorescent lighting, auto white balance will shift colors constantly.

Yes. It was on auto white balance I believe. Thanks for the insight.

"Auto White Balance:

Many cameras allow completely "automated" white balance. Amateur camera operators are fooled into thinking you don't have to worry about whether you're shooting indoors or out, the camera makes the color decisions for you when this setting is engaged. While auto white balance is convenient it's also prone to color shifts, especially under mixed light sources. For best results, professionals always perform a manual white balance anytime lighting conditions change."

Well, that is Odd since all avccamviewer does is change the extension. I think it will also stitch together clips if they are broken up (over 4gb) but it dopes nothing to the encoding at all. SOounds like you conversion program is to blame here. Do you have any other?
