C100: What's coming at NAB for the 'C' line?

C700 would be nice, and should trickle down some new updates for the C100/C300. It would also justify a compressed 4k recording option on the 100/300. Knowing Canon there will probably be a $1000 firmware cost, and we have to wait 9 months to get it.

for c300/500 payed upgrade to the one of the internal CF card slots, so that it could accept CFast 2.0 cards and an upgrade to a hardware for all new codecs and or frame rates internal

but for my c300 i would love to see 60p internal even if its some other codec like avchd 2.o or external

would be great to see 10 bit external over sdi, and 10 bit 60p over hdmi maybe.... (i believe sdi does not support 10bit 60p)

CFast 2.0 cards are like double the price of conventional CF cards with the same storage capacity. I think it will be only available for C500 or in a completely new flagship camera model.

Canon needs to update the DIGIC DV III processor on all the Cinema cameras. High frame rates are a must moving forward and a better codec on the C100.

Apparently the processor is also the reason the camera can only do 8-bit video.

High frame rates, internal prores, and more highlight detail would convince me to upgrade... maybe. Can't really cast any aspersions on the C100's AVCHD for normal use, though. For rentals there's the Alexa...

Digressing off the thread, with apologies, but 8 bit video is going to be difficult going forward:

4K video is all the rage, but beyond all the 4K hype, our dear engineering friends will tell us that nice, well exposed and sharp rushes at HD can look very nice on 4K monitors so long that you use

4:2:2 - we need the bigger colour space that 4K provides
Progressive - there is no place for interlace in 4K
10 bit - scaling up 8 bit does not look nice. 10 bit is where it's at

Canon's XL-H1 ultimately failed to catch on because it was at the tail end of the HDV revolution and used (once again) the strange Canon view of PsF. The XL1 and XL2 were very popular for a while, and my concern is that ONCE AGAIN they're going to sit on their laurels with the C300 and C100. Kudos to Sony - they released the FS100, revolutionary concept, some fundamental and deep down flaws. FS700 was the camera they should have released from the get-go. There's a camera between the C100 and C300 that Canon won't release, where Sony would have just once again catapulted jelly onto the wall and the FS700 (and F5) sticks whereas the FS100 (and F3 - shame) dribbled.

Going forward, 8 bit is not acceptable for HD (due to scaling issues to 4K). 4:2:0 is not acceptable for HD (due to scaling issues to 4K). All pro cameras, going forward, need to do HD using 10 bit at 4:2:2 for their footage to be worth more than 'diddley-squat' in four years time (leaving aside truly historic moments in time captured on an iPhone et al).

I'll continue to own a C100, rent a C300, but I am not buying another 4:2:0 and/or 8 bit camera. Period.

Correctamundo.

seems like it is in the mfg's best interest to extend the life of the camera to make a return on their investment.

I can live with ENG cam (with cine1) with 8bit HD or 4K, there is no problem. But cinema camera with the high dynamic range and with wdr or log gammas needs the 10bit 422 recording, it is clear.

Canon DIGIC DV III is an old signal procesor and needs upgrade. But there are others "4K" problems, you need the better codec (like XAVC, 100Mbps for HD or 200Mbps for 4K is minimal data rate), but in 500Mbps you get only 12min recording with one card, only 6 hours with 2TB hard disc.
This is the second problem, we need bigger cards and bigger hard discs (one more for backup).

The new signal procesor, a new codec, new bigger cards (or a long GOP recording), new bigger hard discs.

If we need 422 colors then we need a bigger chip (for the same sensitivity), 14-16mil pixels for true 422 (2x 8.8Mp), it is about twice more than C100/C300 has for HD 844. If we want the same lenses with the same price (the same size), we get less sensitivity from the chip (even with a technology progress) because one pixel will be smaller.
It is true 422 colors vs sensitivity vs price of lenses.

---

For me is real to get the same lenses, the same size of the chip, a better DSP, 10bit output with 422 colors.
If I could wish only the one thing then I would like the 10bit output for an external recorder.

And long GOP codec at 100-200Mbps (no more) than time of the bigger cards arrives.

+1 +1 +1

I love my C100-Ninja rig...but it will definitely be the last camera body I ever purchase with native 4.2.0 If they release another new line with the old color space and without 1080 60P I am going to vomit.

Okay so I have my sources saying there will be NO new cinema cameras at NAB, nor anytime soon. And continue: "كانون لن تصنع منتجات جديدة ولكنها ستصنع منتجات جديدة من المنتجات الحاليه."
Which means: Canon will not make brand new products, but are going to make new products out of the existing ones.

What could that mean really? I mean practically? New codecs?

(Please don't ask for the source's identity, it's jobs at stack here, and probable tons of legal problems to them. So don't ask, there is no verification, if you don't believe it just ignore my words :)

Processor upgrades for C100 & C300? We know both cameras have 4K sensors, so compressed 4K is a possibility methinks.
