Whats better: vx2100 or pd 170?

Does anybody know? What are the actual differences between them? I know pd is more expensive and have more functions but don't know what they are.
Also how would a dvx compare to the above to while shooting in bad lighting (im planning on getting one of the cams for shooting skateboarding)

PD170 is the professional variant of the VX. It has

XLR inputs with phantom power for external microphones
DVCAM mode for recording, DVCAM is less prone to dropouts than DV
 
Thanks, and what about the actual performance? Would the pd have more settings for colours etc?

My current cam is a dcr trv325e which was good to start of with but doesn't have any settings you can tweak so too familiar with camera settings, trying to do all my homework before buying one :)
 
Neither allows for color tweaking in camera, in fact, there are surprisingly few manual controls. I've used the PD170 and I didn't like it; it's almost like a toy compared to the DVX or the XL2, which is telling considering it's supposed to be competing with those cameras. Get a used DVX, much better value for the money.
 
ya. if you can afford it, get a used Dvx100a or b. Although, if its too pricey a vx2100 will be fine for skateboarding, just not nearly as tweakable.. I've used a GL2 for snowboarding before (gl2 is a canon camera similar to the VX2100 but slightly shittier.) and it worked fine.
 
You can tweak color a bit (nothing cinematic) but you can push up saturation, and shift the color temperature a bit. If you goto the custom preset at the back of the handle on that camera. But I do love some DVX 100B great cam.
