What's a scene file?

Hi. I keep seeing all of these posts about different looks that can be achieved through scene files. But do scene files change how the CCDs interpret the light, or are they essentially digital filters (like in Photoshop or After Effects) which are technically achieving an effect by degrading the image? Thank you so much for your help,

All images are processed by the Digital Signal Processor. Scene Files tell the DSP what to do to the image. They work in the raw digital data domain, and the results are then encoded and compressed.

So do the images end up being a better quality than if a filter was added in post?

Sure. I would say the less you manipulate in post the better the quality. However, I depend more on my NLE to achieve my desired image. I aways shoot with a clean, clear and neutral image setting and tweak the image in post. The only time I adjust my scene file settings is if I am pushing the limits of a particular color... for example if I'm absolutely sure I want a very green-ish or blue-ish tint for my scene I would prepare for that in-camera... but that is a very rare case. If I may, I would advise just shoot neutral and manipulate in post... you have the most flexibility... and the deterioration is minimal... barely noticeable and worth the flexibility for the overall production.

Yes, do all your adjustments in camera. Most people here will tell you not to do it till post, but with the low level/data rate of MiniDV, you are best of doing the manipulation before it gets compressed.
