****, it doesn't look like you can get an smpte-c monitor for less than 1500... P-22 for me baby!

Actually: Cheap TV for me baby! for now at least.

Re: What's a good monitor to buy for the field?

The Panasonic BT-H1390Y is the lowest-cost SMPTE-C monitor I know of. I've got one, it's very very nice, 16:9 and 4:3, PAL and NTSC, underscan, blue check, component/composite/s-video, everything you'd want in a monitor, and B&H and EVS sell 'em new at around $1150 or so.

Not portable though -- even though it's only a 13" tube, this thing weighs like 60 pounds...

jarred,

any new developments on your 7" monitor?

What if I want all of that stuff, but with the p-22 phosphors? What could I expect to pay?
Any decent monitors in the range of say, 3-500?
(damn, and just when I thought I had all of my accy's purchased for a while, now I want a studio reference monitor?? Whats next, Dual G5 to replace my Powerbook?)

And sorry to be working this conversation off of the field monitor topic, but who says I wouldnt lug it with me someplace one day :)

The JVC monitors are like that. I don't know how they are for reliability, etc., but they have some fairly inexpensive high-res CRT's that have good features but P-22. Also the lower-end Sony monitors (like the L1) are P-22. The L1 doesn't have blue check or component video, but it does most of the rest for under $500.

Re: What's a good monitor to buy for the field?

works great.. I actually hooked it up to my computer to check the resolution and was blown away. It does however have a funky way of doing the 4:3

Re: What's a good monitor to buy for the field?

great...do you have a link for one of these things? s-video input right? what's so funky about 4:3? thanks...

Re: What's a good monitor to buy for the field?

Welcome to my Long assed monitor post!!!!

I'm waiting with baited breath to hear more about Jarred's LCD...  My friend, who I co own the 100a with (and used to own the 100 with- sharing the cam makes it so much easielr on the wallet to upgrade) is a steadi cam operrator.   He bought the 7" Panasonic for his steadi cam rig - so soon I hope to try using it with the DVX (especally for use in squeeze mode to get the correct aspect ratio),  but if Jarred's LCD has 2x the resolution- that could be a real winner.

On another note- when I had my TRV-900, I found a setting that looked somewhat similar to how things looked on my sony PVM-20M4U, and once I was "eye" calibrated I could judge  with the Camera's LCD how things- especuially black levels were going to look back in the edit suite.  I got pretty good at it.  Plus I had a hoodman that I made a custom extension for.- that really helped.

I have to try and do the same with the DVX- just get a (non glaring daylight) setting that  corresponds somewhat to what I see on my PVM-20L5 monitor and make mental notes on how to judge black level, contrast, etc.   That way you know what will read in the blacks and what won't- I find that is half the battle.

I think the TRV's LCD was better than the DVX- at least it seemed like it was better than my very early DVX100's LCD- I think the 100A looks better- but never compared them side by side.

If you want to see a great monitor at a reasonable price (though still $$$)
see the Sony 20L5 or 14L5.  The SMPTE C phosphors look amazing and espeacially with High Def material- that monitor displays HD via analog component video input without the $3500 HDSDI sony wants to sell you!!!!

There are used 20"'s  being sold at a decent price on ebay right now- it's the model sold before the  "/1" update which simply added 1080 24psf framrate support.  If you can live without that go for it- I just bought a second one for my home edit suite.  With the 16:9 bezel it looks like a $10,000 HD monitor and I do HD sessions with it every day.

Re: What's a good monitor to buy for the field?

Blue only...

Whasis? Aside from the obvious elimination of R & G, what purpose does a blue-only serve?

Thanks,

Re: What's a good monitor to buy for the field?

It's extremely helpful for calibrating the monitor to the SMPTE color bars.
