What you don't like in the DVX?

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

I am even more confused now

Q: is it the underscan or the overscan monitor that shows the full pic.

scharky said overscan monitor shows the full pic

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

It's underscan...I'm a bit dyslexic so I had to check.

The monitor scans UNDER the maximum size of the picture tube, thus showing you the entire frame. Regular monitors and televisions overscan, scanning OVER the maximum size of the picture.

Monitors that do underscanning aren't cheap...but you should also be aware that any footage imported into a non linear editor doesn't have these issues...you automatically get the full frame because you're viewing all of the picture information natively. Because of this, most NLE's have an "overlay" function that will display two boxes on top of your footage called the "TV Safe" and the "Title Safe" areas.

TV Safe is the outermost box and it shows the area that is almost 100% guarenteed to show on any consumer television. Past that line, it's far less likely that anything will end up on screen.

The Title safe is the inner most box and shows the approximate maximum area you can place your titles on and still have them readable on a consumer television.

Hope that clears up things a bit...take some time and register for the board, you know you'll be comming back!

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

Sorry about the confusion, I always get those two mixed up. BTW, you could always hook the camera into your laptop or computer, as the capture screen also shows the entire image being captured, with no "overscan" :D.

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

After sifitng through all the recent posts on Sony HD cam, and the undending speculations about the fate of the new format....and a hidden anxiety among the dvx owners...

I think one ADDITIONAL thing I dont like in the DVX is that it is not HD....
So bad ...Panasonic...why did u not think about it beforehand

just joking

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

For handheld, the DVX100A is pretty bad. Lousy OIS (optical image stabilization), and a balance that is so centered (like a tightrope walker without a pole) that it is actually harder to keep it stable. I own a DVX100 and this is my biggest gripe. (My only serious gripe, actually. Otherwise, it's wonderful.) The Canons have the best OIS (perfectly usable footage at 16X handheld: amazing). The Sonys are very good, too. The Panasonic DVX100A just isn't there. It needs a tripod. Otherwise, handheld footage is nauseating to watch. And exhausting to shoot.

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

The F-cine-dial-switch-thingy can get bumped and changed way too easily.

The audio needs to be less sensitive. Finding a sweet spot if you're doing stand-ups with a lav or handheld requires a field mixer.

Bayonette mount is a pain.

Design overall could be sturdier. I've had parts break twice in shipping.

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

The silly little audio dials are stupid - very hard to grip hold of properly...

And I really don't like the fact that 'squeeze' mode streches the image on the DVX viewfinder, as if it were a true anamorphic image. Why can't it just put 'fake' letterboxed black bars in like most cheap 'n' cheerfull camcorders, so that you get an idea of what the images looks like in proportion?

And following on from that, I wish you could 'squash' the standard 4:3 image to 16:9 on the viewfinder so that when you use an anamorphic lense adapter, you can see the true proportions of the image.
