What you don't like in the DVX?

While we have already discussed so much about the positives of this great cam, what is it really that bothers you in your DVX?

For me it is the lack of minute detail, specially when shooting panoramic, scenic views.

The idea here is not to complain but to have a more practical understanding of the tool that all of us admire generally.

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

- no remote control for zoom
- a bit side-heavy
- XLR-covers get lost constantly

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

You can get remote zoom control.

No remote focus control is, however, a problem.

And while I love the wide angle, I do wish it had more zoom reach -- a 16x would have been nice.

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

Barry,
of course you are right concerning remote zoom, I meant remote focus...

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

-slowest zoom speed is too fast
-lens shade not solid enough
-Camera bottom surface should be more durable. Not the smooth plastic it currently has.
-Too long of delay switching from Interlaced to Progressive mode
-Tricky to use lens cover design

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

By the way, for those who lose their XLR covers, I tied a piece of strong mono fishing line through both covers and around the small part of the hand strap. Never lose em that way. Patent Pending...ha ha ha

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

The reds are often over-saturated.
Lots of noise in dark areas, even when other areas are well let. This is especially true in deep blues and purples.
Not very clean gain and poor low light performance compared with sony's offerings.
The zoom has little blips in it on the slowest setting (nothing too serious).
Like any 1/3'' ccd camera, very little DOF and dynamic range.
No LANC port.
The heads seem to be a little more sensetive/less reliable than on a gl2, for instance.

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

- focus and zoom rings feel too flimsy/cheap which makes manual control difficult. If they were "heavier", manual zoom and focus would be much easier.
- gain is too noisy so low light usage is almost out of the question
- some noise even without gain
- 10x zoom. 16x would be perfect.
- plate in front of lens makes lens cleaning a big task
- demands expensive dry lube master quality tape
- ditto on LANC support, xlr covers, lens cap
- only 3 speeds for zoom, jumping between the speeds. ideally zoom speed increase would be smooth and speed presets would be optional

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

i want the abnility to overcrank/undercrank the footage for smooth fast/slowmo... :P

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

I would love a more variable servo zoom on the camera. I know the 100A at least improved on the zoom's slowest speed, but I'm still stuck with the DVX-100, and a 15 sec slow zoom that's not even particularly smooth in 24p.

I'm talking super-slow creep, a la the opening shot of "The Conversation," and any pro servo zoom. Oddly, the DVC-30 has an amazingly slow creep (something like a minute or more from wide to tight). Wish they'd have done that for the DVX. I wonder if having the disengagable servo precludes going with an ultra responsive servo zoom (and a super-slow slow speed), with regards to Panasonic's lens design.

Obviously, smooth variable control and disengagable servo for manual zoom works on pro lenses, so hopefully Panasonic can implement it on the DVX.

And 16:9 chips, of course. :)

Actually, 16:9 guides in the viewfinder would have been nice too.

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

Looking at the responses, I think it will be helpful if the price range of the camera is not overlooked...

I mean ...''should haves'' in USD 3500 range camera.

Just a comment...no referral to any response as such.

Thanx to all those who responded and made me more knowlegable about DVX.

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

I think it would also help if you could specify whether you have a DVX 100 or 100A.

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

I had a DVX100, and now a DVX100A.
Great Camcorders !

OK, so we're talking about improvements...

the DVX100A has a little better dynamic range, maybe 1/2 f/stop, and the new cinelikeD adds another 1 f/stop more lattitude, great, but i would like more.
also, even more resolution and native 16/9 would be great.
Interchangeable lenses would be a gift.

...that would be fantastic.

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

I've heard (from sales people) that the construction fastening the lens to the camera body is weak so support rods are required for matte boxes and lens attachments such as the anamorphic adapter.

Is that true, or are they just trying to sell me more stuff? If it is true, then that's something I hope Panasonic addresses in their next iteration.

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

hey, i think aejaz is actually a panasonic engineer in disguise looking to see what to change and include in the upcoming DVX200HD! ;D

Depends on the matte box. Some require rods, and some don't. As far as the Animorphic lens goes, I don't even think you could attatch rods to it if you wanted to. Sounds like someone was trying to get some more money out of you.

Re: What you don't like in the DVX?

there are not many stages of developments, technology wise, that are possible. in the horizon we have HD on it's variants, native 16:9... all welcome. so i won't talk about the "big things". some "little things" bridged over the 'consumer' and the 'professional' and made the DVX what it is, a shooter-friendly.

* bring the iris ring to where it belongs - on the lens!
* be brave and make it -- once and for all, a non-infinite focus ring.
* as mentioned here, but further more -- 1.78:1 / 1.85:1 / 2.35:1 guides in the viewfinder.
* another record on/off button, on the front - lower side of the camera.

DV is so compressed anyway, and i start to lean towards the "do it in camera and not in post" approach, so -- even more control on picture:
* individual RGB controls over the low /mid / high tones ...well basically, a built in CCU ::)
* 'snap shot' of camera settings. should include shutter speed and white balance.

that's as much as i can think of in this hour of the morning....
