What would you like DVXUser to be in the future?

A topic about what people want a forum to be is essentially inviting criticism of how a forum is currently (run), so offering such criticism would be well within the spirit of the topic and also not against forum rules.

And it has been taken that way thus far. Some people are asking questions in relation to moderation and I am discussing that. I am just being very clear about where the line is drawn.

In the future, I would like DVXuser to be a place where contributing members are not easily banned.

You may want to refer to my DM.

If people have general feedback for moderators as a group here, please feel free to share them in the spirit of this thread. Let's however keep the discussion moving forward as well.

Lets stick to the topic shall we? If anyone would like a nuanced discussion on moderation, or anything else please feel free to drop me a DM. No more bombing the water.

My advice to the mods would be to lighten up about humor and thread drift/off-topic posts. Different people have different uses for the site and we risk entering a death spiral if we begin to lose more users than we gain.

I always assumed that I annoy people with my obsessive tendencies. And while I'm sure that's true for some, i got a message from someone I've never seen post publicly in response to an audio question i asked. They recommended a piece of gear and then wrote:

Thanks for all your contributions here. You and NorBro should start a debate show.

I think we should try to keep dvxuser fun as well as informative

I don't think anyone is uptight here in the mod group. There's plenty of threads where you can roll with it and have fun. I am simply trying to keep this clean so when it comes to collate everything, there's not a lot posts to go through that aren't relevant. Just trying to make my job easier.

My final point in relation to myself and other mods. There's simply no us and them within the mod group. None at all. We are all volunteers. Every last one of us and many of us have been at it for many years and do our very best to let the forum guide itself. I'm also a member of other forums such as this and believe me, the ban hammer comes down fast and regularly on them. We are by far the most relaxed group. Joined some of the facebook groups? Even look sideways and they'll drop you.

One thing we will be looking at going forward is consistency.

The question I'd ask, is do you think that post is humorous?

It doesn't matter if I think it was humorous or not. It only matters that I think it was an attempt at humour.

Who am I to say what's funny or light hearted or an attempt at brevity? It's impossible to try and police that type of thing on an international forum, so why worry about it?

One random thought, and maybe the forum tools aren't capable of this - but could you get a notification when someone quotes you? So that even if you aren't following a thread, you'll be alerted to someone responding to your post

Yes, well worth looking into.

I am not trying to "police" it. I removed it from this thread. I started this thread and I am removing irrelevant posts in attempt to keep it easy to come back to and see the well thought out members posts.

I am well aware there's a lot of things humorous to others that I don't feel so, so I certainly don't plan on forcing my views onto others. If someone was to make a racist joke here for example, am I not to remove it under the cover of humour? Sorry this isn't the Dave Chapelle show. That post will be gone and the member warned. The only time I look at a post is where there's a clear line of that could be frustrating / annoying / offensive to other members. I won't apologise for that either. We also have rules around this which serve as our guide to that.

Regarding poking at mods publicly, well as a moderator, I don't find it funny. That doesn't automatically mean I am uptight or not up for a laugh. I've had many of those here over the years. Although, as I've mentioned numerous times already, I am willing to have an open dialogue about any members concerns in DM. In DM I don't care if someone were to tell me moderation here is rubbish because it allows for discussion. I think I've made that clear enough already?

You should be getting them, check your settings. Every time I’m quoted I have a message in my inbox.

I receive such notifications.

I am just going to post this here as a reminder. Yes, it's true these haven't really been enforced the past few years to the letter. That doesn't mean they won't be. For goodness sake, please just try to start every post with a little respect?

Respect your fellow filmmakers -- regardless of age, experience, or opinion, you should always show respect to fellow users. Personal insults of any sort are not tolerated. If you feel another user’s post is inappropriate, please report the post or contact a moderator. Participating in a flame war is uncool even if someone else started it—and just like mom and dad, we’ll give you both timeouts. Be slow to give offense and slow to take offense—a lot of disputes are just plain misunderstanding or miscommunication. This is a worldwide community, and english is not the native tongue of some of our members. Please exercise patience and extend the benefit of the doubt to those who are taking the effort to communicate in english just to participate with us.

Please don’t post any messages on the topics of—politics, religion, or explicit sexuality -- not that we don’t find these topics interesting—we do, but they’re not appropriate for this filmmaking forum.

Please don’t post any images or links to images with explicit sexual content -- nudity in still images is not acceptable. Links to films that contain nudity are acceptable as long as the post is appropriately labeled for content. Links to any pornographic content are unacceptable.

No trolling -- expressing an opinion is fine, but if you’re hanging out in a particular camera forum in order to “convince” users that a particular camera is no good—you’re trolling. The individual camera forums exist to serve as technical and informational resources—not as personal soapboxes. Posts that are meant to provoke other users (baiting) are not acceptable. Also, please limit yourself to one username per person.

The search engine rocks! -- before you ask a question, please do a search. We have an enormous amount of content and there’s a good chance that your question has been asked before—probably several times.

Please check to see if a thread on your topic already exists. If you have a question or comment about a particular topic, it’s a much better idea to post on a recent existing thread, because it helps keep our content organized.

Please post in the correct forum -- posting in inappropriate forums makes extra work for the moderators and you may find your post moved or deleted if you didn’t bother to find the correct forum. Also, no crossposting--please only post your question in a single forum.

the café -- the café exists as a space for dvxusers to hang out and chill together. Filmmaking posts that don’t fit in any other of the forums should be posted in the café. Non-filmmaking topics are acceptable, but please limit your non-film-related posts. Most of your posts should be outside of the café.

Violating dvxuser policy -- the normal procedure will be: 1) warning by private message [pm], 2) temporary ban if the warning is ignored, 3) permanent ban for continuing problems. However, if you go out of your way to violate the rules, we can and will skip straight to #3.

Self-moderation -- for the most part, the users here practice self-moderation. Take a moment to think before you post and if you’re unsure of something, ask a moderator. We’d rather be concentrating on the fun stuff like running dvxfest, writing reviews, and offering technical advice. If you’re a newbie, you’re welcome here, but you may want to spend a week or two reading posts and seeing how things work before you dive right in.

My favourite bit from the rules is:

"Self-moderation -- for the most part, the users here practice self-moderation."

This forum absolutely works best when forum members pull back from escalating rows with a well worded comment or by ignoring an offending post and scrolling on.

All I ask is that it is continued and reinforced through light-touch moderation. That hasn't always been the case in recent times which is important to acknowledge before moving on.

Self-moderation works really well when users actually practice it. And most users around here actually do.

As for light-touch moderation, there’s a whole lot that goes on behind the scenes that most users don’t see, so it’s easy to understand how folks might assume that we’re just itching to ban people. We aren’t.

In so many cases, it starts with deleting a post that crosses a line, and sending a PM that lets the user know the post has been deleted, and why, and to please consider forum guidelines in future posts. Sometimes, that’s all it takes. Other times, though, we get really nasty PM responses... or, the member escalates their posts to try and push the boundaries even more. That goes well beyond what light-touch moderation is able to accomplish. Banning is always a last resort, except for obvious spam accounts, but I assure you when it happens that there’s a whole lot more that happened behind the scenes leading to that decision.

Probably time to practice some self-moderation and get this thread back on topic, don't you think Alex? This particular horse has been flogged to death.

Liam, do you mean that Alex should moderate himself? That was his second post in this entire thread.

As for being on topic, moderation is on topic, and more generally so is the politeness or lack thereof of the forum members.

It was irony... and I was practicing self-moderration. Are you saying I’m impolite?
