What would you like DVXUser to be in the future?

I think the site should be renamed to JohnBrawley.net to attract the kind of member(s) we want.

Eric, just curious as to weather you've had a disagreement in your life where there was really no winner and you and the other party couldn't reconcile? From the outside that appears to be what happened here in relation to the underlying topic behind this. At least that's what it looked like from my perspective, having not been involved and being privy to reading every part of that discussion.

The reason I ask is that you seem to be hanging on to this like a dog with an old bone. I am not 100% sure of your motivation for doing so. If you'd like to have a discussion through DM, let's chat and see if there's a way to resolve that. Happy to talk with you.

I will say though, whatever direction DVXuser takes, I won't be tolerating these trolling posts going forward.

I probably shouldn't speak for other people, but j think that both the posts you reference are all in good fun, and I definitely think that good fun should continue to be a part of dvxuser. Along the lines of self-deprecating humor and inside jokes

I see no "good fun", self-deprecating - or really any humor of any sort in posts that seem to try and belittle others - especially when those others are volunteers. And I'm not sure how defending it moves the discussion forward in any way positive way either.

...I didn't think they tried to belittle anyone, let alone the volunteers...?

I thought the post with the camera taped to the tripod is a sort of metaphor for obsolescence and how expensive cameras eventually become nearly worthless. And yes, he made an analogy to the forum. But clearly the poster is a dvxuser himself, which is why I thought it was self-deprecating. And I got a good laugh from the post he referenced, which was made by an account called shittyrigs

And then Coughlin's post was a joke about how we all want Brawley back. I think that by now it's understood that he could return if he chose. I also think Coughlin has expressed some responsibility, either humorously or seriously, for Brawley getting banned since it happened on a thread of political nature that he started. (I don't think Coughlin is responsible for what happened at all)

And I mean, these posters are positively-contributing members. It's not like they only show up to tell us that the site should close. The very act of their posting is participatory and productive to the forum. And anyway, I thought they were funny and I didn't sense any malice. I suspect this is all a misunderstanding

I can see where you're coming from on Laverdir's post. Most likely meant in jest.

Eric's post about John however is difficult to take, from where i sit anyway, from wanting to do anymore than get a reaction. Thus why I asked Eric to pm me so we could discuss it further if he wishes. As far as this viewable area goes however, I am going to retain my stance.

That's just his personality; he has said hundreds of similar things like that on this forum.

Definitely understand the POV of someone who doesn't spend much time here (not saying you, just in general), but that's a very normal Eric post (which is 50/50 a trolling post, and the other 50/50 is something awesome from one of his higher-end productions).

Well maybe its just been allowed to go on too long. Forum is moderated for the benefit of all, not a few.

Honestly, besides like 5 people, I don't think anyone knows it's even moderated.

Besides various Barry Green covid-related closings in 2020, I've seen like a total of 20 moderator posts in the last 5 years.

I've witnessed and been in many very heated threads and rarely saw anyone flexing on us.

It was mostly only the politics that was always shutting things down.

We have tried to allow threads for the most part to continue unabated. I won't tolerate people spitting from the sidelines. As mentioned, from my perspective, the forum is there for everyone, not for a few to soap box. That pretty much sums up my stance on the matter.

Yeah, I hear you - but I don't know if you want to push too hard because eventually there will be no one left and moderators will only be moderating each other.

As this thread is about the future of DVXUser, perhaps it does need to be tightened up a little. There's still plenty of people using this site.

EDIT TO ADD: fwiw I have had just as many dm's about this post as there are posts from names you'd never see come up here. All have given it some real thought, much like the majority of posts here.

Maybe some consistency would help. You can't have it both ways.

I'm seeing this as two seperate issues. First is in relation to forum layout and accessibility. Second is in relation to posts that I feel are not in the best interests of the community. Don't get me wrong, my stance will always be to try to stay clear and allow for open discussion, but the posts I am referring to are not open discussion at all. As a moderator here for many years, unpaid at that, my focus will always be community first.

I understand your point and your dilemma here Noel but are you saying no humour in case it upsets a mod or only humour you approve of? - And no, I'm not trying to be funny...

The question I'd ask, is do you think that post is humorous? If you go to our general forum rules and stick within that, then there's no issue. Humour I don't approve of? Well, let's change that paradigm to "humour I don't believe is in the vein of the best interests of the forum or isn't actually humour, but a something else disguised as such or doesn't fall within the forum guidelines".

A topic about what people want a forum to be is essentially inviting criticism of how a forum is currently (run), so offering such criticism would be well within the spirit of the topic and also not against forum rules.

In the future, I would like DVXuser to be a place where contributing members are not easily banned.
