What would you like DVXUser to be in the future?

That section actually used to be closed off and linked to BMCuser, but the site change/transition opened it up.

Critic corner: A part of the forum where people post private links to current work-in-progress in the hope of getting useful feedback.

Today, I was editing a job I shot in Switzerland last week and really needed a second or third opinion. My wife isn't speaking to me and my kids have buggered off so I was left with a cat and three elderly chickens - not great to debate if I could get away with the dodgy sequence I'd put together. Luckily, my wife decided to start speaking to me again so I got the feedback I needed (yes, the sequence is crap...).

Each post could be labelled "pro", "beginner", enthusiast" or even "American" allowing members to respond accordingly, so as not to offend (yes, I'm looking at you Karen). Maybe we vote up and down responses, so if a member acts like a dick he (because you know it will be a he) is banned from posting for a bit.

One of the biggest lessons I learned (a thousand years ago) was to stop treating your latest film like your newborn child. People are too easily offended by comments about their work and given 90% of newborns are ugly I believe we can move past this and actually help people improve their art.

Furthermore, one issue I've always had on here is not knowing how to respond when someone posts some work, particularly if it's rubbish. Do they want constructive criticism or do they want their back rubbed and told how brilliant they are? I tend to like straight-up, honest feedback and often (not always) give that type of critique to others too but realise it's not always what is wanted.

There you go, that's all I've got for now, I'm a bottle of wine down and have been working like a dog. And as I tell my clients; feedback always appreciated; good, bad or indifferent.

I can imagine this being very nice for about a week, then nuclear holocaust.

it would be a very useful thing though. maybe there's a way to prevent specific people from commenting on your threads there once you've decided you don't want THEIR feedback...

re: the tone of criticism, I think it should simply be governed by typical politeness. artists are sensitive

Generally the conversation is polite on here. Maybe only members with a particular high rating could comment??

I think a private critique section is a great idea. I do not really do personal projects so I never post paid work on the internet unless it is a YouTube public delivery . If I could post knowing only a select few video nerds are going to EVER see the post I would like to get feedback. Client trust is paramount and is my main reason I hardly ever post WIPs.

One could specify in the post heading like the marketplace if they wanted CC or just to display with no comments etc...

This is pretty much what the User Films section is for. However, that forum is buried so deep on the landing page that it's too easy miss, or to scroll past.

I'm not here to critique anything that's been said in this thread. I want any and all ideas to flow. However I can agree with this statement.

I think a User Films makeover and rebrand of that section could be in order? I am thinking if that was a section where "feedback" was included in the title, people who and viewers would know what they're getting in to from the outset. Something like "Member work for Feedback" or "Seeking feedback", could work.

I also feel like there could be a user guide on the landing page. Sort of "click on latest posts to find the current conversations. Post your work in DVXUser-Made to get feedback. Subscribe to threads by doing blah blah blah. Don't be a jerk." Etc. When I first started coming here regularly, it took me a while to catch on to the Latest Posts thing. And I can tell there are folks who browse the forums and respond to dead threads. People start duplicate threads without seeing the topic they want that's already underway.

Move the Lens/Optics sub-sub-forum out from inside the Cinematography sub-forum and make it it's own sub-forum on the main page(ideally right below Cinematography) or just drop it altogether and move all of the historical/existing posts and content to the cinematography forum so that they're still available for reference. To me, it is too 'out of sight(site ), out of mind' and almost completely hidden, being a sub-forum of a sub-forum. It seem like most lens posts end up being posted in camera sub-forums. But maybe if it was more visible as a "main sub-forum", it would attract more visitors/posters.

TBH I don't care about or much use the form/sub-forum structure. I mostly use "New Posts" and the search tool. The forum structure could possibly be more useful to me if it were simplified. But even better, I'd like a more capable search tool. I also think it would be nice to have a sort of User Guide on the landing page explaining to newbies how to navigate the forum and also laying out a general code of conduct

I'd like a more capable search tool.

This forum would be SO much easier to navigate if the search tool didn't have a 4-character minimum. Searching for "GH#", "A7#" or "XT#" or any of the myriad of other three character product names that we have to work with always ends in frustration.
